Whici part of the Pyreness is the most scenic part to visit in January?
Hi there,
We are flying to Madrid in mid January and hiring a car for 12 days with our 2 daughters. We would love to visit spectacular mountain scenery and hopefully do some day hikes where its not entirely covered in snow. Is it necessary to travel into France to do this or is the Spanish part of the Pyrenees just as spectacular? Is Torla as amazing as what I have heard and would that be a good choice for us. What other parts of Northern Spain are worth visiting or should we also go south as well? We need to finish in Barcelona as that is where we are dropping of the car. |
The Spanish Pyrenees are every bit as spectacular as the north side of the border. They are not to be messed with, however, so know what you're doing before you get above the snow line on foot.
Hard to recommend a) without a little bit more guidance from you; and b) because I've only been once, to Benasque, which was lovely |
The Ordesa National Park and Torla is spectacular:

The Navarran Pyrenees are quite spectacular, especially the Irati Forest. But in January there will be snow above 1000 meters ( tinyurl.com/pf67uex ).
The Aragon Pyrenees are the highest part of the Pyrenees ( http://www.rural-pyrenees-guide.com/aragon.html ) and offer all types of adventures. |
Unless you are looking for winter sports, I would not go to the Pyrenees in January. I would choose to go south to Andalusia, which can also have snow in its mountains.

Instead of Torla, I would opt either for Benasque or Jaca

Benasque looks like a great idea: http://turismobenasque.com/
