Day 1 I did the math on SSB, swiss travel pass is not saving more than 15$ also depending on if weather is not so great and I don’t go zermatt peak, it’s practically useless. what other option do I have? does Swiss pass cover Zurich it Milan? |
Let's make the maths:
Day1: Glattbrugg dp 8.42 via Zurich - Bern - Spiez - Visp to Gornergrat ar 13.16, dp 16.22 - Glattbrugg ar 21.17. Full fare: 382 CHF/pax Saver Day Pass, if bought in the web well ahead: 52 CHF plus Gornergrat railway 58 CHF = 110 CHF/pax There is only 1 restaurant at Gornergrat: panorama self service (open from July until end October) Day 2: Glattbrugg - Lake Zurich (any station) 36 CHF/pax (ZVV Pass) Day 3: Glattbrugg - Bern - Broc chocolate factory/Gruyeres castle (3 hrs OW) Full fare: 170 CHF/pax Saver Day Pass, if bought in the web well ahead: 52 CHF/pax Day 4: Glattrugg dp 7.48 - Schaffhausen ar 8.33, dp by Rhine river boat 9.10 - Sein am Rhein ar 11,15, visit and have lunch, dp by Rhine river boat 13.15 - Steckborn ar 14.02, dp by bus to Frauenfeld and then by train to Zurich - Lucerne ar 16.25. Back to Glattbrugg at any time, Full fare 100 CHF/pax Saver Day Pass, if bought in the web well ahead: 52 CHF/pax Day 5: Glattbrugg - Lake Lucerne - Lugano - Menaggio or Chiasso/Como OW: full fare: 80 CHF/pax with Saver Day Pass, if bought in the web well ahead: 60 CHF/pax A ticket from Chiasso/Como to Milan cosst 6 CHF/pax//OW A ticket from Varenna to Milan costs 8 CHF/pax//OW Comparison: Full fare for all trips: 775 CHF/pax Saver Day Pass:320 CHF/pax Swiss Half Fare Card 120 CHF + 191 + 18 + 85 + 50 + 40 + 8 = 510 CHF/pax Swiss Travel Pass for 6 days: 379 CHF + 58 CHF + 8 CHF = 445 CHF/pax: |
My rule of thumb is along these lines
1. Dates and routes that are set in concrete - buy well ahead of time to get the best fare 2. Dates and routes that i’m pretty confident i’ll take - book ahead, even if that is just a few days or a week or so to get some discount or to force me to commit to a plan. 3. Dates and routes that are iffy depending on weather or mood - wait a while longer - even day before may afford some discount, or be prepared to pay same day fares for the benefit of flexibility. |

What would be the next best option? |
