Which Road Atlas Is Best?
We are renting a car in Frankfurt Airport, driving around the Mosel Valley, Baden Baden, Rothberg, Fussen, Salzburg, and dropping the car off in Munich.
Went to a couple of "known" bookstores to look at spiral atlas books for Germany, but they didn't have any (!) Went online to see who publishes these spiral atlases and am now very confused. I would appreciate any suggestions on different spiral book atlases so that we can make a more informed decision. |
I have an Aral atlas, the Aral Straßen Atlas. It is in German. One of the major book stores might be able to order it for you.
You might try a big store like Brentano's. I have seen it also on Amazon. I personally use one of the set of Michelin road maps of Germany. The best place for the whole set is Onemapplace.com. Over the years I have acquired quite a collection of European road maps from this source. |
When I searched amazon.com, I was shocked to discover that they still sell outdated stuff. Avoid everything with a publication date before 2007!
I would recommend this spiral-bound atlas: Michelin Germany: Benelux, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic: Tourist And Motoring Atlas. February 2008. # ISBN-10: 206713289X # ISBN-13: 978-2067132894 http://www.amazon.com/Michelin-Germa...967&sr=8-1 |
Another vote for the Michelin spiral bound Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria atlas.
We're happy with the Michelin atlases in general--in addition to the one mentioned above, we also have the France and Italy atlases. However, something you usually find in German rest stops and book/press shops is the HB BildAtlas, a combo of atlas and travel guide with nice photos and route suggestions. Inexpensive, but only in German (except for the Berlin and Hamburg guides, also available in English), and "perfect bound", not spiral bound. We have those for a couple of regions in Germany. There is a brand new Bavarian guide coming out next month. http://www.hb-verlag.de/programm.asp |
I've always liked the ADAC Straßen Atlas which is available through Amazon.de.

Thank you all for your suggestions and information. I will research the different maps and atlases mentioned and make a decision.

I also like ADAC maps. If you can wait, they are available in the bookstore at the Frankfurt airport.
They are also available at mapsguideandmore.com. |
