Which Paris neighborhood for apartment rental?

Hello! My bf and I will be in Paris for a long weekend the end of March, and we are wanting to rent an apartment. We are 28 and 26yrs old, and this is not our first time in Paris, so we are really wanting to be able to eat, drink, walk around, etc. We are looking forward to going out as well. I have narrowed my search to 2 areas where I have found available apartments in our budget. One apartment is on Rue de Martyrs in the 9th, in what I guess would be the South Pigalle (SoPi) neighborhood, which I have read great things about. We stayed in the 4th on previous trips, which we really enjoyed, but the other areas we were looking were near Place de Republique in the 3rd/10th area, I guess this would be considered the Haut-Marais. We are wanting to go out at night, but we also want something that will be great to stroll during the day, and we do get more space for our money in the 9th, but I reckon the Haut-Marais is probably more hip, closer to Oberkampf, Canal Saint-Martin, Belleville, etc?

It's be a year since we were last in Paris and we stayed in the St. Paul area in the 4th near the Seine, which we enjoyed but we found ourselves heading deeper into the Marais at night to go our and explore. I am not as familiar with the 9th/18th.

Thanks for any advice!

I'd pick the area around the Place de la République.

I suppose the 11th around Oberkampf could be hipper, I've stayed a couple times in the 9th and like the rue des Martyrs area myself and would choose that. There are actually a lot of young people in that area, so I'm not really sure about the hipness comparison. I just think it's a cozier area meaning smaller streets, not as much traffic, etc. And mostly locals in the bars and restaurants.

But where exactly is this apt, that is a very long street and I've stayed in the area at the bottom. It goes all the way up into the 18th (and there are some trendy clubs up in that part of it, I think some of the most popular in Paris like Divan du Monde). http://www.divandumonde.com/

But below bd Clichy, it isn't like that, it's a regular neighborhood and rue des Martyrs is a great pedestrian market street below that. There are lots of nice bars and young people hanging out around place Toudouze and in general along Rude Blanche over near the church and in-between those two areas. I really like that neighborhood a lot, and if it were on rue des Martyrs between Lamartine and Trudaine, I'd take it. People were really friendly to me when I went to an Indian restaurant on pl Toudouze where everyone ate at a long table out in the open air, and I didn't realize you had to bring your own wine (the resto didn't serve it), so the young couple next to me shared theirs with me, it was a lot of fun. Maybe it was just small tables for 2 but they were crammed so close it was like one long table.

Thanks for your responses!
@Christina, the apartment is located on the lower half of the Rue de Martyrs, near the Rue Saint-Lazare. You can see the link here: http://www.myapartmentparis.com/apartment.php?Id=102 . I think this is going to be great since we will be there for the weekend market on Rue de Martyrs. I have also read about great nighlife in the area, including south on Rue Montmartre, though I know we will want to head over to Oberkampf/Canal Saint-Martin, the Marais on one or two nights, but that shouldn't be an issue, an inexpensive cab or short metro. I just wanted to get a feel for the neighborhood there. The other apartment I was considering was closer to Gare du Nord in the 10th, but it is on the 4th floor without a lift! Here is the link: http://www.myapartmentparis.com/apartment.php?Id=98 .
I've done that once before, though it was great for offsetting the multiples pastries I ate each day. I think we are going to try the one in the 9th. Thanks for the advice!

That location is pretty good. Just go up about a block and then you can go left on rue Clauzel (which has some funky places on it) to hit place Toudouze where there are several bars and restaurants. That area has a lot of history for black American expats from a long time ago, there was a famous restaurant there (Chez Haynes) but it closed a cuople years ago, I think. http://www.ruedescollectionneurs.com.../haynes-us.php

rue des Martyrs has shops on it all the time, small food shops, other than just the weekend market. At least that isn't very far from a couple metro stops, also (like ND de Lorette or St Georges). There is bus no. 67 which goes to/from the Marais to rue des Martyrs and rue St Georges. It goes up rue des Martyrs. Here is the bus map http://www.ratp.fr/informer/pdf/orie...loc=bus_paris/

I think there are some shops and things on rue du fbg Montmartre, also, as you noted. I believe Hard Rock is on there, not that that is anything great, but other places, also. Chartier restaurant is down that way farther south and is worth a stop for the experience, if nothing else. It is cheap food, nothing fantastic but okay. Also, Au Limonaire is down that way even more, so the SE (but still in the 9th). That would be a new experience, a wine bar/club with chanson (real) and other music. I think they don't have a cover charge but pass a hat for people to donate what they want. /http://limonaire.free.fr/

If you don't know French, that could be too much for you, not sure.

here is an article which is pretty old but lots probably still applies http://www.metropoleparis.com/1996/60610016/rue.html
