Which Paris apartment? Found less expensive without aircon!

Ok, so the consensus is that VIP ID #158 is good. However, at $345 it's still a bit expensive for us (we're already going to be in Egypt for a month prior to our Paris trip so that'll drain our pockets too).

I found the below for under $300, which would you choose and/or have you stayed at any of these (again, we're 2 adults and 3 tweens/teen kids visiting in August)?

D#18 - Marais-Saint Paul Two Bedroom Apartment
66 rue St. Antoine
http://www.VacationInParis.com/apts/id_18.htm
This is for $240 a night and is 43 square meters (about 462 square feet).

ID#41 - Square du Temple Two Bedroom
7 Cite du Petit Thouars
http://www.vacationinparis.com/apts/id_41.htm
This is for $255 a night and is about 520 square feet.

ID#142 - Large Loft with Picture View
52 rue L'Homond
http://www.vacationinparis.com/apts/id_142.htm
790 square feet for $292. My kids are 12 and older but (since heat rises and even 12 year olds can act younger than their age) I'm thinking this may not be a good choice?

ID#242 - Two Bedroom Duplex - Upper Marais-------------------------25%
Discount 3 rue Vertus
http://www.vacationinparis.com/apts/id_242.htm
$263. 680 square feet.

If they do not have AC in August, I would not even consider them. Your family could be quite miserable in an apt without AC or good cross ventilation in August.

I am booked in #18 the second week of July. I am hoping for moderate temps because I totally didn't think about the AC thing when I picked it. We were so focused on location/price that it didn't cross our minds.

If you think you can handle no a/c, 242 looks the best to me--airy with a chance for decent cross-ventilation. I do like the look of that loft in the 5th, but if your instinct tells you it wouldn't work for your family then best to avoid it.

Do you use a/c a lot at home or no? I don't even have it in my apartment so that's why I'm pretty flexible about it as an amenity.

I like 242 -- do they also have fans? The cross-ventilation is good and I like the floor plan.

There are two issues, heat and noise.

It will be hot and humid. Not perhaps as hot and humid as Houston or Orlando, but it will be more humid than Egypt. There are reasons why the French go away for August.

The noise issue has to do with whether you are on the street side of the courtyard (most Parisian buildings are built like donuts) or on the back side of the courtyard. On the back side, you won't even know there is a street. On the foreside, you won't be able to keep the windows open, esp on a busy street like St Antoine.

I personally would make the a/c a requirement. The difference between $345 and $263 is $82 -- a little over $11 per night, about $2 per night per person.

What is a good night's sleep worth?

A few thoughts:

# 18 looks as though the only windows are in the living room and kitchen--none in the bedrooms. That would rule it out for me, especially in the summer.

#41 comes with two fans and has a few more windows over the front courtyard. I'm not sure if that will be noisy or not.

#142 loft has an awkward upstairs set-up since you have to walk through the secondary bedroom to get to the master bedroom and the bathroom.

# 242 duplex has more air and cross-ventilation though I couldn't tell if the windows are on a street with the noise that comes with that.

If you can live with the heat and really want to economize but have adequate living area for 5, I'd choose 242.

A lot of us do not go away in August. In fact it is our favorite month in Paris, although it has not been very warm for the past 4 summers.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Yesterday my sister who lives in Chicago calls me complaining about the "heat wave" they were getting (it was 85/90 fahrenheit but apparantly humid). She hadn't turned on the AC in her apartment and heard a ton of whining from her kids/hubby. She said I was crazy if I thought I could rent an apartment in August without AC. She then started "reminding" me of how annoying it is to hear grown men and their children whine and complain all day. So... going back to the AC option. ID #158 lookn good.

I wouldn't do without AC in August if I had a choice, and wouldn't do that if I had a whole group to plan for unless they really understood what that meant and all agreed.

I think there is someting questionable about #18, anyway -- a 2 bedroom apt that is less than 500 SF?? They admit it was originally a studio. I don't see how that is even possible. Aside from the AC, the apt is a whole lot smaller than the other one which is 810 SF.

Another vote for getting A/C. I find Paris hot when it's in the mid-70s, much less 85+.

BTW, I've rented from Vacation in Paris twice and recommend them. I appreciate that the rates are in $US so they don't fluctuate, and the ability to use my credit card instead of sending Euro moneyorders to strangers. My two-cents : )

Having been in Paris the summer when deaths occurred from a miserable heat wave, I would definitely opt for the A/C!
