Which MIchelin Map for our Provence Itinerary
 

Which Michelin Maps to purchase for our itinerary?

I am trying to figure out which Michelin maps we should pruchase for our upcoming (September) trip to Provence. Here is our plan - so - which maps should we have with us? We did purchase Map #527 but that is very general and I think we need more detail for driving.

Day 1 – Arrive Marseille mid day
Day 2 – Marseille
Day 3 - Marseille
Day 4 – Pick up rental car and drive to St. Remy to hotel. Visit Arles and Les Baux
Day 5 – Avignon, Pont du Gard and possibly Uzes, Nimes, or Orange
Day 6 – AM Market in St. Remy, then drive to Bonnieux to hotel, visit Gordes, Rousillon & Bonnieux
Day 7 – L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue market in AM, Lourmarin – Goult, Menerbes?
Day 8 -Drive to Aix-en-Provence and check in at hotel
Day 9 – Aix en Provence market in the morning
Day 10 – Drive to Marseille, return car at airport and fly home.

Since you already have #527 wait until you get to France. Any store selling paper products: newspapers, cards, and books will have some Michelin maps, especially the ones covering the local area.

As part of our planning we love looking at maps - so, even if more expensive to get here, if we wanted to get them in advance - which ones should we get?

Map 113 covers all of Provence - even a good portion of the Gard & Montpellier area. It has the same road detail as the 527 has - but the scale is 1/160,000 compared to 1/200,000 - so you won't be squinting as much.

I purchased map 113 in France last month for 5.3 euros(left mine at home). It is also available on Amazon for $8.96.

What about the 300 series? Are they worthwhile also? And if so, tehn which ones would I need? I have read posts saying those maps are good to have.

The 300 series maps are the same as the 100 series - only the scale is slightly "better" 1/150,000 for the 300 vs 1/160,000 for most 100 series.

If you wanted the 300 series maps, you would need two of them - the 332 for most of the stuff you want to visit, and the 340 to get you from Marseille to St Remy & for visiting Arles. If you decide to visit the Pont du Gard and/or Uzes, you would need a third map - 339.

Stick with the 113 for Provence.

I have about 5 copies of the 113 map and zero copies of the 332 and 340 maps. I have thirty-five 300 series maps for other regions in France.

Go for the yellow ones -- 332, 334, 339, 340... depending on where you are going.

I've always used the 300 series maps, but now would be inclined to try one of the 100 series Zoom maps if there was one that covered the area I needed. Especially if I would need several 300 series maps otherwise. How much practical difference can there be between 1/150000 and 1/160000?

Just curious, Kerouac, are there other features of the 300 series maps that would make them more useful than the 100 series maps?

I'm not Kerouac (he's probably in bed by now), but the 300 series maps include an index of the cities in the department (not the same as all cities on the map). The 100 series maps do not - unless they added one in the last 2 years.

You won't be able to tell the difference between 1/160,000 and 1/150,000. You can tell the difference in 1/200,000 scale.

The 114 for the Var and the 115 for the Alpes Maritimes (Cote d'Azur) have additional roads indicated, and are on the scale 1/100,000 - which is really nice.

I've used Michelin #527 (Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur) for the past 3 years that I've traveled in Provence. It was extremely helpful. I've used it to travel to most of the cities on your list. I would recommend getting a Garmin with European maps. It is a life-saver.

I recently bought #113 from Amazon, and it does have maps of Aix, Marseille, Arles, Avignon, Montelimar, and Montpellier.
