Which Map do you suggest???
Hello, I am looking for suggestions on good maps for walking around towns for Florence, Rome, Venice. I have a great map for all of Italy but it is not very detailed when it comes to the actual towns. Thnaks in advance for your help.
Happy Travels
Gary

I like the Streetwise series, which you can get at Borders or Amazon.com. I think there is even an Italy pack for several cities in Italy although I can't remember which ones.

I agree with Vita. Streetwise maps are pre-folded, laminated and fit easily into my purse. I have one for Florence, one for Rome, and gave one for Venice to a friend of mine who went there last year.

BC

I'm another fan of the Streetwise series, although they're only available for larger cities. I don't think I've seen a Venice one, but perhaps it exists.

There is a Streetwise Venice, and I'm a fan of that series of maps as well.
I also found that for Rome I needed one with even more detail, there were some
short streets and alleyways that weren't marked on Streetwise Rome and this was difficult when I was looking for a particular church or cafe.

Michelin's Roma Tascabile was my new best friend. Amazon carries it. It is a 5X8 spiral-bound book, and it has an alpha list of seemingly all streets. It doesn't however offer a city-wide view, so that's what the Streetwise map can do for you.
Allow me to put in a plug for Fodors here. The maps I used, and loved, for both Rome and Venice were the ones contained in Fodors slim "Citypack" guides. Unfortunately, for some reason (probably to save money on printing costs or something), the newer edition of the Rome "Citypack" guide has eliminated the excellent detailed map of Rome's Centro Storico which was on the flip side of the main Rome map (poor move, Fodors.) If you can find an older Rome "Citypack" guide, it should contain the better map.

In addition to the maps themselves, I make photocopies and mark them up with highlighters so I can more easily find certain streets and buildings. Also, if I lose them, I still have the original map as a resource.

Eyewitness Travel Guides - Italy or Florence, Rome or Venice from Amazon.com: have a look at them. Heavy to carry around but excellent.
