Which london travel card?
 

I am confused on which travel card to purchase for trasportation

I see in the guide books that there is a one week travel card that seems you can purchase in London? then there is the visitor travel card that must be purchased in advance before getting to London? Then I also saw on which included transportation and admission into many sights

Can anyone explain the difference and which is the best one to get? We plan on being in London for 7 days and plan on taking two side trips outside of the city

Your best bet is probably to get an oyster card after you are in London. There are several options about what to load on an oyster - so just ask the ticket agent in the first tube station you use. But hopefully that isn't during the morning rush hour since folks will be in line and in a hurry. The ticket seller will point you to the best options for where you are traveling/when.

Don't buy the advance purchased travel card from home - more expensive and it includes more zones than you will need. The associated London Pass can be purchased w/o the transport option - but for most visitors it isn't a great bargain. Except sometimes they do have a 2 for 1 sale. Then I <i>might</i> consider it. But since most museums and galleries in London are free you probably wouldn't use a London Pass enough to get your money's worth out of it.

We were looking on buying the 7 day london transport card for zones 1 and 2 for &pound;22.20 adults and it says &pound;11.10 for children but that confuses me since it says that children are now free if under 11

Do you think this is worth it or should we still just purchase on when we are there

Can you explain a little more about the oyster card? First time I am hearing about it

Children under 11 travel free on the Tube when accompanied by an adult - but not before 9:30 on weekdays. Buses are always free for those under 16. Here's the official party line:
