Which is Better--Wine Village Grinzing or Gypsy Dinner in Vienna and also Need Information on Sound of Music Dinner--Saltzberg!

We will be on a tour and at the start will be staying in Vienna --we will only have time for one of these dinners--is the trek out to the wine village really worth it with all the crowds? Can you tell me if the Sound of Music Dinner in Saltzberg is formal and is it worth the price of $100--thank you.

Maureen, when will you be going to Vienna? Depending on the time of year, it may or may not be that crowded in Grinzing. We were there in May and it was not crowded at all. We took the #38 Tram to Grinzing and had a wonderful dinner at the Hauermandl at 20 Cobenzlgasse (http://www.grinzing.net/ehauerm1.htm). They have several strolling musicians that play while you eat. It was very nice.

Betty, thanks for your response--we're traveling in busy July but it sounds like it's worth the effort.

My own somewhat biased opinion that anything in Salzburg (no t in writing it) connected with the Sound of Music should be called the Sound of Money -- what was yours jingling in their pockets.

I view anything along those lines as schemes designed to take Americans for a ride, literally and figuratively.

The Austrians would not give you a used 5 groschen piece for the Sound of Music, except for those who directly profit by lifting much more than that from us.

Hate to sound ornery, but I thought everything around Salzburg connected with SOM was a slightly disguised fraud.

Otherwise I like the town and the attractions. So you cannot say I don't care for the place. Quite the contrary; I will pay the fair city a visit in a few weeks. But I will not hear the sound of money making music to Austrian ears by investing in activities connected with Miss Julie and Mr. Christopher, and Swiss borders moved 100 miles or so east for movie convenience.
Since we were in Vienna on business we attended a tourist/business dinner in Grinzing. But ask in your hotel for a genuine Heurigen. We went to one near our hotel (Parkhotel Schonbrunn) and it was so much better - and cheaper! Even the wandering musicians. Unfortunately I have no idea what the name was. But I have heard they are all over the city.
We were there last month and Grinzing was crowded - all tour buses.
have a great trip.
