Which is better? Mougins or Cagnes-sur-mer?
We have reservations at accommodations in both Mougins and Cagnes-sur-Mer. Will be w/our ten month old, driving from Marseille after a long day of travel (plane then TGV). Reservations are comparably priced at Manoir d'etang and Le Cagnard. Any thoughts on either of these places or their locales? Also, are they relatively close to one another? Would love to be w/in 1/2 hr. of a nice beach. Thanks in advance for your input.

Le Cagnard is actually up in Haut-de-Cagnes and the more difficult to reach of the two you name. Parking is a real bear--the streets are VERY narros, and mostly the hotel staff parks your car for you at an automated multi-level lot down the hill. The hotel wasn't one of our favorite Relais et Châteaux hotels--a little down at the heel and in need of major refurnishment when were were there. The dining room is extremely expensive, and there are only one or two restaurants within easy walking distance.
The Manoir d'Etang is a place we've often passed and thought we should look into. It's not up in old Mougins on the hill, rather down on the plain, which means access is easier. From there you'd be about half an hour from Cannes, which has fine sand beaches. The beach down at Cagnes-sur-Mer is rocky.

Thank you very much for your helpful reply. In this case, we'll probably go w/Manoir d'Etang. It's slightly odd that we have not been able to find any candid user reviews on this hotel, while we've found many on Le Cagnard (mostly positive, although, as you have, they do mention parking issues and the need for refurbishing...). Would you know how far it is from Marseille by car? Wondering if driving on Saturday, August 6th is going to be a nightmare (think it's the second of the "Grands Départs" wknds, if I'm not mistaken...). Any idea how far it is from Marseille, approximately? Thanks again.

The drive from Marseille should take you less than 3 hours via the autoroute, although in August it might be considerbly longer. Have you considered the train instead of driving? You could easily pick up a car rental near the Cannes train station.

I just found Le Manoir d'Etang in the Hunter Rivages "Hotels and country Inns of Character and Charm in France," one of my favorite hotel guides. Also in the book is the wonderful Le Hameau near St-Paul-de-Vence, along with a number of other excellent hostelleries.
The guide says the hotel is housed in a bastide dating from the early 19th century, with a beautiful garden and a swimming pool with a terrific view.
I'd go for it!
