Which Hotel in Athens for the money?
 

It seems the prices are highest when we'll be there in June! I have read the posts and checked prices. Please let me know if the price difference is worth it - and help me sort these out. Last time we were in Athens, we stayed at the Attalos. It was clean but TOO SPARTAN. I would like something a little nicer this time.<BR><BR>Hotel Cypria - 97EU<BR>Stanley Hotel - 88EU<BR>Philippos - 92EU<BR>Astor Palace - 97EU<BR>Royal Olympic - 139EU <BR>Herodion - 149EU<BR>St. George Lycabettus -175EU<BR><BR>Please let me know if paying the extra $50+ is worth it for the Royal Olympic, St. George Lyc. and Herodion.What order would you rank all these hotels?We would like to be centrally located.<BR><BR>The Hotel Cypria looks dated in the photos, but read it had just been renovated. Anyone know?<BR><BR>Don't want to confuse... I also was looking at the hotels in Vougliameni (sp?!) - I found one called the Armonia for 185EU and the Plaza Strand for 145EU. Would it be worth staying out there and taking a bus or some other transportation back into the city or is it a real hassle? Are there nice restaurants in the beach area?<BR><BR>Jef you have been very helpful -hope to hear from you.<BR><BR>Would appreciate any help in narrowing the search!<BR><BR>

Stayed at the Cypria November 2001. Location was central and good. Breakfast ok. Rooms very small, tiny bathrooms with tiny showers. Mildew smell. Would not recommend it, but then again I am not familiar with the others on your list.

Hi,<BR><BR>I consider that when paying for hotel stays, your money should go for outstanding value and services including new or FULLY renovated amenities,...it is also a sort of recognition-award for hotelliers who are making efforts to invest and improve their facilities.<BR><BR>1/ royal olympic:good location but has not been renovated yet.too old fashioned<BR>2/ cypria(poorly renovated), astor near syntagma...expensive for what they are offering.<BR>stanley nicely renovated but poor location downtown...<BR>3/ philippos and herodion: my favourites .Nice and tatsefull renovation/good service and full buffet breakfast,nice location in plaka area .You should get a better rate when calling them...<BR><BR>4/ St george nicely renovated in of kolonaki the 'chicest' shopping area with cafes/shops etc...<BR><BR>5/ in vouliagmeni go for the Plaza(the armonia is in poor condition).<BR>Yes ,it worth staying there(the city is the safest place in athens )and the transfer by bus or taxi is a pleasant journey along the riviera.<BR>Why not enjoying the beach untill 9 pm(afer all, if you visit greece you should prefer the sea than a swimming pool) after a full day of visits?and then finishing your evening in one of the many tavernas and cafes.

ginny<BR><BR>Don't overlook the Stanley. I've lodged there every year since late 1989 and enjoy it very much.<BR><BR>Renovated not too long ago, the rooms are largish and very nice too. Air-conditioning, refrigerator, TV etc in each room. <BR><BR>Its rooftop pool, bar and restaurant are extremely pleasant especially in the evenings with a good view of the Acropilis.<BR><BR>It is an 8 minute stroll from Omonia and in 2002 a new Metro station opened right on its doorstep. Getting around the city from the Stanley is now very quick and easy.<BR><BR>I agree with Jef's comments about the Astor. Stayed there about 2 years ago and was disappointed. It's location is superb but the rooms and public areas were tired. Very tired.<BR><BR>Rob

Ginny,<BR>I'm interested in Philippos Hotel but was quoted 130 EU for a double for May. How did youget the 92 EU rate? The Adrian sounds decent as well. Comments?<BR>

Hello Ginny:<BR><BR>I just stayed at the Royal Olympic for 4 nights. They had a special in March (through web sites) which averaged 83 Euros per night. I realize that summer prices are typically more but I saw a lot a variation in prices for the same hotel and same date through different sites so keep looking.<BR><BR>I don't know about other hotels but this was definately a good hotel. It was older in appearance. Had a typical nice chain room look. Rooms were good sized and clean. Front desk was polite on several occasions when we needed help. Waitstaff at breakfast were friendly and fast. <BR><BR>Location was very good, directly in Front of Temple of Zeus. Closest metro was less than 3 minutes walking. Walking distance to Plaka region and Acropolis.<BR><BR>Hope this helps.

You can try the Acropolis Select Hotel.
Very good location - excellent staff, and not to expensive.
I can reccomand you to contact Dolphin Hellas Travel Agency - they had a much better price, than all the Internet-bookings a came upon.
