Which hotel in Amsterdam?
 

I am trying to decide between the following hotels for a trip to Amsterdam in August. I'm interested in a convenient location and a hotel that I can't find anywhere else. Any experiences you would like to share?<BR><BR>Ambassade<BR>Estherea<BR>Canal House<BR>American Hotel<BR><BR>Many Thanks!

No experience in any, but I hear the Ambassade is nice

Dave,<BR><BR>You'll probably never get a reservation at this late date, but the Hotel Brouwer is the most consistently raved about hotel in Amsterdam. It has the combination of history, larger than normal rooms, a small lift, and very inexpensive. <BR><BR>We couldn't get in last time, but opted for the Inntel, which is a real American style hotel, but very nice and in the very center of it all. Do searches here on all your choices, you should be able to find some info. The American is indeed at Leidseplein and is *very* central. As are the other hotels you mention. I don't know why ajs has the idea that Leidseplein is not "centrum".

I went to Amsterdam in April 2000 and stayed in the Radisson. It was close to everything...shopping,museums,restaurants and the red light district...It was nice a little pricey but worth it...the continental breakfast was amazing.<BR><BR>Just go to Radisson.com and click Amsterdam...really worth it...<BR><BR>Good luck

Stayed recently at the Estherea, which is family owned and quite nice. We paid for a deluxe double and got a spacious room with a lovely canal view and a top-notch bathroom. They also let us check in at 10 a.m., which endeared them to us greatly.

I've stayed at the Ambassade and the Canal House which were both lovely, but I have to say that when I go back to Amsterdam I will try to book at the Ambassade first. I think I prefer it's style and sophistication over the Canal House and I also felt the staff was more helpful when needed. You can email me if you have any further questions.

Will be staying at the Ambassade next week for the third time. You hit the nail on the head when you said, "a hotel that I can't find anywhere else." I even like the fact that for some rooms you have to angle down little halls or go up a step or two, as the hotel is a long strip of individual houses put together. Both the rooms we have had before have been beautifully decorated and comfortable. The staff is always very helpful and friendly. The only negative is the breakfast -- although very nice and in a beautiful room -- is really quite expensive. Never mind -- I like the pastry shops and coffee at nearby Spui.

Here is my opinion...<BR><BR>I have stayed at the American Hotel and unless they have done a remodel, its not very nice inside anymore. It just and old version of what it use to be. Years ago I believe it was part of the Intercontinental group. Last time i stayed there rooms wer a bit shabby and since this is a chain hotel, the staff was not too friendly.<BR><BR>The Canal House is very quaint and relaxing and the Estherea and Ambassde always get good marks. I stayed at the Tulip Inn which is in the area around the university. It was very convenient-close to everything-The rooms were VERY clean and people very nice! Good luck! FYI-if you take the dutch airline bus(I'm having a momentary brain freeze and can't remember the airline name)they have a stop almost in front of the hotel-at least they used to !! god luck- Sharon

Ambassade...hands down. Estherea is supposed to be a close second...but why would you want second best?<BR> Location: A+ Walk everywhere...charming square and bistros within a block. Museums a short walk away. Floating flower market, Museum Van Loon, the Begijnhuis (around the corner)...all very close.<BR>Beautiful rooms, and great staff...gorgeous antiques, lovely breakfast room overlooking canal. What is not to like. Book your room ASAP...many important authors stay there, and rooms go fast.
