The woman we rented our house from in Saignon referred to Goult as "the best-kept secret in the Luberon," or some such phrase. We had first dropped in the day our bakery was closed in Lacoste and then visited it again last year with my brother and his spouse. You can park in one of a couple of free lots on your left hand side as you enter the village from the south. You can then walk uphill through narrow streets, finally reaching a small park that offers wonderful views to the west and north, if I recollect correctly. As StuDudley mentioned, the streets aren't lined with grockle shops.

I have been using Michelin's new 300 series "Local" maps that StuDudley refers to. They are yellow with an orange band across the top. I found the green series excellent for touring, but I would say that the new 300 series is even more legible. I had no trouble finding them in a travel book shops in Canada and also noticed them on sale in bookstores and tabacs when we were in Uzès last year.

Kathrynj, would you be prepared to tell us where you found your house in Goult?

StuDudley, a public thank-you for sending your file yesterday afternoon. I have a note going back to you this afternoon.

If you have trouble finding a Michelin map, especially the more detailed ones, in a bookstore, visit www.maptown.com. The site says that it carries *all* Michelin maps in print.

Happy to let you know how I found the house---looking on-line for places around Goult! If you google Goult and villa rentals, you'll find many in various prices ranges, some on the road to Gordes. Ours was "Maison Rose", a village house, right on the town square. Rented from Susan (who was terrific) whose agency is www.housesforhire.com While the town may be the same size as Rousillon, StuDudley is right that is much less touristy (Bonnieux is larger though, I believe). Bartavalle is a delightful restaurant and there is also a new one right on the square. The epicerie is one of the best known in France and was used in the movie, Swimming Pool which was shot around the Goult area. I had looked into houses in many of the surrounding areas others have mentioned but felt this location was superb for all the day trips like the Sunday antiques market in l'lsle sur la Sorgue, St Remy, etc. Let me know if I can answer any other questions---have a great trip!

kathrynj, thanks very much. We'll add that place to our list next time we return to the Luberon.

Wow! You've all added lots to my list of charming and picturesque villages. I'll have to extend that part of my itinerary to fit them all in.
Cigalechanta - you're right, they're not in Haute Provence are they? Trouble is my total itinerary is quite extensive so I have many regions swimming around in my mind at any given time. Then I get on the web somewhere away from my maps (like at work - aren't I naughty?) and post a message while trying to remember - not always successfully - which region I'm talking about!
I take it, summing up, that for a base from which to do day-trips, just about any of the villages mentioned in this thread will be good. Thanks again.
