Hi all! I have finally booked tickets to Greece. I have 2 days to go to Meteora.
1. How should I go there from Athens? Rent a car, take the train or book one of those guided tours. Does anyone have experience with those? I found 2-day tours for just Meteora and some that also include Delphi. I'm tempted to do it for the convenience of not having to plan anything and not having to drive and just hop on the bus. Or would it be best to just rent a car? 2. If I decide to rent a car, is it possible to do Santorini-Meteora in the same day by taking a ferry from Santorini to Athens and then renting a car from Athens to Meteora? If I decide to visit Meteora after the islands, going from Santorini to Meteora in 1 day instead of 2 would allow me to avoid having to find a hotel in Athens just for 1 night and would give me more time in Meteora since I'd be there for a full day instead of having to drive there one day and drive back the next day. Hopefully that make sense. |
I can't answer most of your questions ... but I can say that IMO, a single night in Meteora, with long drives before and after, would not necessarily make sense. Would you actually have any time to see Meteora's magnificent monasteries? They aren't open 24/7....
Before committing to a tour that includes both Meteora and Delphi, make sure you know what you want to see at those locations. I know that for MY purposes, I would have needed more time. YMMV. Good luck! |

Thanks! I don't know why it didn't occur to me to fly. I see now that I can book an early flight, then rent a car at the airport and drive to Meteora. After Santorini, I still have 4 nights. The last one will be close to the airport to catch our flight the next day. I can return the car then. So my plans currently look like this:
Athens - 3 nights Naxos - 6 nights Santorini - 3 nights Meteora - 2 nights ??? - 1 night Athens - 1 night Where should I spend that last night? I'd like to stop by Delphi. Should I spend the night there or somewhere else? |
Can you fly "straight" to Naxos (you will have at least one stop en route) so that you can put all your time in Athens in one block at the end of your trip? Or fly into Santorini (it is, I think, easier to get there than to Naxos), then go to Naxos, then to the mainland....
Delphi is magnificent. I you can add a night there, it is IMO well worth considering. And while it really depends on what you want to see and experience, you might consider shifting at least one night, maybe 2, from Naxos (6 nights is a LOT there) to somewhere else ... maybe a few nights in Napflio between Meteora / Delphi and Athens? |
Hi Kja,
I'm not sure if you read my original posts, but I was asking for an island where I could spend 5-7 days and Naxos was recommended. I'm just hoping to relax and soak up the culture, so I think 6 nights will be perfect. Also, I arranged the trip to be in Santorini on specific dates. Glad to know Delphi is a great place to spend a night. |
