Which foods in which country?
 

I'm a cheesey traveller... as are most of you.

What foods and snacks should I be sure to get in each of the following places...

London
Paris
Bern
Rome
Florence
Venice
Salzburg
Prague
Berlin
Amsterdam
Brussels

Are you a cheesy traveller because you like cheese or because you prefer to eat cheaply?

Or did you mean to say that you are a choosy or choosey, i.e., particular, traveller?

Perhaps if you would express yourself more clearly, one would know better how to respond.

And I hope that you are not planning to visit each of the cities named in a single trip - unless the trip lasts two or three months...

No, I don't think troll.

bamassippi has been posting a bunch of questions about an immenent 6 week trip to europe and is doing some last min travel planning.

Having been to about 2/3 of the cities on your list, the only things that stand out as must haves, for one reason or another are

Pommes in Brussels, pilsner in Prague, tortufo in Rome.

Everywhere else it's been whatever sounds or smells good at the time. Indian food in London, Sushi in Berlin, Chinese in Amsterdam, and steak in Florence.

The fried cheese is fun in Prague as well--I forget the Czech word for it. And try a Nutella crepe in Paris.

In Salzburg, try the austrian Sausage with fresh horseradish and hot mustard from the street vendor across the street from the main train station for 2.5 euros with a beer,Yummy! In Paris, try the Chicken GYRO from Port the D'Istanbul cafe on Ave Port D'Italie (one block north of the roundabout with the large ugly statue in the middle!)We got two very large gyros with fries and
a small salad plus two beers each for 12 Euros including a 1.5 euro tip. unbelievably great too! In Amsterdam, try the greek restaurant HERMES on the street leading into the red light district (where all the restaurant people are standing outside trying to get you to come in!) we had a 15 or 20 item tasters meal that had everything from the menu and a very nice bottle of wine for 35 Euros total with a 5 euro tip and it was wonderful!

Paris - crepes and ice cream on Ile Ste Louis
Florence - definitely gelato, best anywhere
Munich - spaetzle(sp)a potato based noodle dish and fresh, never added to German beer
London - curry

Besides basics like white corn polenta(Venetian cuisine is not as much pasta-based as the rest of Italy), some dishes Venice is known for:

Fried soft shell crabs

Risi e Bisi--rice and peas

Liver and onions

Sarde in saor--fried sardines marinated in onion/vinegar sauce

Grilled calamari

Cicchetti--Venetian tapas more or less

Cuttlefish cooked in their ink

Eel in bay leaves

Paris - Cheese, Eclairs and Macroons
Rome - Espresso and Gelato
Venice - Nothing
Amsterdam - Croquettes from Febo automats and stroopwafels
Brussels - Chocolate

Prague - pork, kraut, yeast dumplings + Pilsner Urquell

this is making me hungry!

the fried cheese in Prague is called smazeny syr (I think the spelling is at least close), and it is typically served with tartar sauce. think hubbie's favorite beer here is Gambrinus. :)

London- Indian food! Go for a proper curry.
Paris- Croque Monsieru at l'ombre de Nôtre Dame (if you are facing the cathedral, it is on your left)
Florence- gelato. . . (eat it walking along the Ponte Vecchio)
Venice: Sardine in saur. Please drink Aperol con spritz. I can't get it here.
Amsterdam- Hutspot (a hearty soup). Or anything, as you will have the munchies anyways.

Comes from fishing, where one slowly drags bait through the water (trolling) to get fish to rise to the bait.
