Thanks, BC; I'd read that as well (about the hood.)

Thanks also, xx. No, I didn't know that the cappuccino was invented in Austria. The name of a food or beverage does not necessarily tell one where it was invented. Just like the croissant. It was also invented in Austria, in Vienna, to celebrate the repulsion of the Ottoman Turks (hence its shape, that of an Islamic crescent) but has come to be associated with France and, of course, has a French name.

Thanks, xx. Perhaps you're right, who knows? The website below says it was invented to celebrate the repulsion, but it's probably one of those things where no one is entirely sure.

http://frenchfood.about.com/library/weekly/aa021000.htm

Anyway, I'm sure we'd both agree that what is generally considered a French pastry was invented in Vienna.

I'd love to try coffee in Vienna sometime, as I've heard it's right up there with the best in Europe.

www.cuisinenet.com has a version of the croissant story somewhere in between Capo's and xx's:

http://www.cuisinenet.com/digest/breakfast/croissants.shtml

I drink my coffee black, and while I do love the odd espresso in Italy, I find that if I want a long drink, then their "americano" isn't that great.

So my vote goes for The Netherlands, where they manage to achieve a beautifully long drink of rich black coffee with a hint of foam on the top. And they give you a bickie on the side!

Vienna. 18th district off Herbeckstrasse, (can't remember the exact side street, but it's aat around #60 or so, a corner bakery. The best. The recipe is: good coffee, excellent water, and the machine is cleaned often. The pastry would make a priest renounce his vows...
