Which class of train to reserve Rome/Naples
We are arriving in Rome airport at 8:45 on Oct 12 and need to get to Sorrento. Planning to take the train in to Rome and then the train to Naples and then the train to Sorrento. Thinking of reserving an 11:45 train from Rome to Naples. Which class should we reserve, 1st or 2nd? Do you know how long the train ride is from Naples to Sorrento? The approx cost? Thanks!

I don't know, but it is a mainly a commuter train for locals so cannot cost all that much.
On a budget I would certainly travel 2nd class from Rome to Naples; there is not all that much difference, especially on such a relatively short trip.

The 11:45 Rome to Naples is a superfast AV 1hr 27 mins. Cost is E46.60 1st class E36.10 2nd.
The 11:28 Rome to Naples is an IC+ 2hr 2mins. Cost is E25.50 1st class E19.50 2nd.
Amica fare (20% discount) might be available on both.
The Circumvesuviana to Sorrento is about 4 or 5 euro

2nd class on the trains from Rome to Naples is roomier & more comfortable than coach on an airplane. If you always fly 1st class then book 1st class train. Otherwise 2nd class is perfectly fine.
Since you are even asking about cost, it would suggest that you don't normally travel 1st class. Nor do I.

HI E,
Depending on traffic and luggage handling, you might not make the 11:45.
On our last visit we were scheduled to arrive FCO at 08:00.
We got to the head of the tracks at 11:30.
The shuttle train to Rome TE leaves on the :06 and the :36. It takes 0:31 hr to get to Rome. 11.5E
There is a 0:10 - 0:15 min walk from where it stops.
You can buy your tickets to Naples at the FCO train station when you get your ticket to Rome TE.
They will put you on the next available ES* or AV.
Don't take the regular train. They tend to be unreliable.
The Circumvesuviana train leaves from the lower level of the Naples Centrale (Garibaldi) station.
You have to buy another ticket.
Enjoy Italy.

Nor does Ira's comment apply about a 10-15 minute walk from where the Leonardo Express stops. It hasn't stopped that far away for about two years. It's actually the very first track now and very convenient.
Another option is the bus from Rome to Sorrento. Curreri runs this route at 2 pm and the cost is 16€.

I wish to take a train from Rome to Naples at 7:30 AM and then transfer to the commuter train (Ferrovia Circumvesuviana) to the Pompeii Scavi, Villa dei Misteri stop on the Sorrento train line).
Then I will return to Naples from Pompeii on the commuter train and then to Rome that night.
Approximately how much will that cost for a senior citizen first class round trip ticket for the Rome-Naples-Rome train?
do you know how I can arrange for a tour of Pompeii?

Just an update.... The Leonardo Express is "scheduled" to depart/arrive from Track #25 - a satellite track. This "dedicated" track has been in play for the Leonardo Express for about 3 months. So IRA is correct when stating you will have to make a 10-15 minute walk from Track #25 into the main station. I've done this walk many times and it's at least a 10 minute hike!
Usually the AV trains (fastest to Naples) leave from tracks 6-10. These tracks have updated monitors, screens, and displays... all to "merchandise" the higher cost, and newer, AV trains. Unfortunately, the AMICA class tickets are no longer available for AV or ES trains. This link has a picture of the Leonardo Express parked at Track #25 (and other pictures of Termini that may be helpful)

Naples to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana is 3.30 Euros each way. The trip takes 64 minutes.
www.vesuviana.it
There is also a direct motorcoach from Roma Tiburtina (NOT Roma Termini) to Sorrento leaving at 14:00 daily except Sundays for 16 Euros each way. Arrival in Sorrento at 17:30. There is a direct train from Roma Fiumicino Airport to Roma Tiburtina (different from the nonstop train to Roma Termini). This other train departs every 15 minutes, and costs 5.50 Euros each way.
www.curreriviaggi.it
There is a competing motorcoach service by Marozzi
www.marozzivt.it
If neither coach service has convenient schedules, simply go by train all the way to Sorrento, as noted in the previous postings.
You really don't need to go first class on the train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale. Second class is usually fine for most people. If you have LOTS and LOTS of heavy luggage, first class might be more comfortable (more space for luggage).
If your plane arrives on time, it's not unreasonable to plan on taking the 11.44 a.m. Eurostar AV "Frecciarossa" out of Roma Termini (even though this is the MOST EXPENSIVE train between Rome and Naples). Note that you can save 20 Euros per person by taking the 11.28 "Archimede" Intercity (IC) train, which is still a good train, even though it takes a bit longer and makes three short en-route stops. It goes to Palermo/Siracusa, but is an "all-reserved" train.

I just noticed that your arrival date of October 12 is a Monday morning. You can expect somewhat heavier traffic on the Rome to Naples trains, but most of the "rush" will be on trains departing in the early morning hours. By lunchtime, the traffic situation should return to "normal", which means not excessively crowded, because October is NOT "high season" any longer. My guess is that the 11:28 IC train "Archimede" bound for Sicily will NOT be very crowded. When you exit passport control/luggage retrieval in Rome and are able to determine your exact departure time on the airporter train to Roma Termini, you will be able to determine whether you can "make" the connecting 11:28 IC train, the 11:44 AV train, or some later-departing train to Napoli Centrale. You can then purchase both tickets (for the two trains) at the Roma Aeroporto train station ticket windows.
If your plane arrives late, you will need to re-calculate your commute time, so I suggest that you print out the complete train schedules between Roma Termini and Naples from 10:30 a.m. until late afternoon.

GAC - This is an old post (from 08) that has been ressurected by efkiss. I'm sure the OP traveled last Oct.
efkiss - Depending on when you are going, you might be able to take the Marozzi bus which departs Rome Tiburtina station (which is a couple of metro stops from Roma Termini). The bus leaves at 7 am and will drop you at Pompeii Scavi at 10 am, no changes involved. Cost is 16.50€ one way. I would plan to train back though as the bus is at convenient times for returns.
