Which city to spend 4 nights from London by train

Hello need to be in London in January and was thinking of meeting hubby for 4 nights in a close-by city that I can go to by train from London (up to a 3 hour ride is OK). I am not really fond of flying and there are some interesting cities that are reachable by train from London. Would prefer somewhere I have not been, so we are kind of ruling Paris out.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Also, I've never been to Europe in winter.

Edinburgh, York, Glasgow, Cardiff, Oxford, Bruges, Amsterdam,

all will be cold but have good places to eat and things to see.

we were posting at the same time. The days will be very short.

It's a shame you"ve ruled Paris out even if you have been there. It would be much cheerier in winter than Brussels, Amsterdam or Germany. However, if you are determined to skip Paris, try Brussels and Brugges or Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is further than 3 hours by train however (but not much), and worth a visit!

I am not determined to rule Paris out, actually my husband prefers it but I thought with so many places that we can go to, we should try something new. Also I've been to Brugges and Amsterdam, he hasn't, what about Antwerp?

I'd definitely choose Edinburgh before Antwerp. Though it is 4 hours by train from London. York or Bath would be nice. The short duration train rides from London would be Paris, Bath, York, Brussels, etc.

Janisj, Thanks for the suggestions. I thought Edinburgh was very cold and wet in Jan, I have been advised to stay away from Scotland in winter. Please tell me what u think

Yes - but EVERYPLACE in northern Europe will be cold and wet or snowy in Jan. Including London, Paris, Bruges, or any place else you could reach by train. You won't have balmy weather anywhere in Europe at that time of year.

The days are shorter in Edinburgh - but only about 45 mins shorter than London or Amsterdam or Antwerp.
