I absolutely second the nomination for Barcelona. We just spent 4 nights there in July and it was not nearly enough time. In addition to the sights in the city (Gaudi architecture, Olympic venues, Gothic Quarter, Picasso Museum, Palau de Musica, Park Guell, and on and on) we took a day trip to Montserrat Monastery which was awesome. I've heard there are also easy day trips to beach resorts at Sitges or Tossa de Mar. <BR> It is easy to get around on foot--the whole section from Placa Catalunya down Las Ramblas to the Columbus Monument doesn't take more than 20 minutes or more (except for the time you spend looking at everything). We bought the 2-day pass for the Bus Turistic, which takes you to 24 main sites in the city, and you can get on and off as you choose. The Metro is also easy to use, as are the trains for day trips. <BR> And, you can stay in the Gothic Quarter, which is very quaint; on Las Ramblas itself, or in the Eixample section of the city which features lots of Gaudi-style architecture. <BR> Madrid is also a good bet, with the added attraction of fabulous day trips to Toledo, Segovia, Avila, Valley of the Fallen, El Escorial, etc. It's easy to get around, also has a tourist bus like Barcelona, and a good Metro system. If you go, don't miss the Prado Museum, the Royal Palace, and most especially, the wonderful Plaza Mayor.

Florence- beautiful architecture and art, not too many hills <BR> <BR>Venice- go to Saint Mark's square once at night, and the whole trip will be worh it :) (though I love all cities by night!)

PS. I also vote for London- most efficient public transport, not tooo expensive if you look in the right places, free museums/galleries, they speak ENGLISH (surprisingly enough! hehe).

I loved Freiburg Germany for walking. It is a city, but only a small to mid-sized one, so you can't compare it to London. Lots of small streets, little traffic in the areas of major interest, lots of places to stop for a quick bite or a beer. Just watch out for the bikes. <BR> <BR>Paris and Prague are my favorite cities for walking so far, with a slight edge to Prague because it is more compact and has less traffic.
