which "areas" of any european countries are your favorites......

and specifically which towns/cities in those areas. i guess my definition of "area" means towns that are no further than a car-ride away from each other. who wants to start......

What do you consider a "car-ride" away?

My favorite place in the world is Rome, and you don't want or need a car there and you don't need to drive anywhere!

Cesky Krumlov and Telc south of Prague are fun and not too far from Prague.

There are several UNESCO World Heritage sites near Madrid - Avila Toledo, Salamanca, Segovia and Cuenca are worth a visit and two hours or so by train.

Chesky Crumlov, from Budapest. Very cool town, gruesome sculpture exhibits in the castle basements.

well there seems to be quite a few folk mentioning the Czech Republic,I am a frequent visitor to Prague ,a city i love but nearby you have the wonderful town of Kutna Hora, with it's macabre Bone Church in the suburb of Sedlac,a wonderful cathedral,a silvermine and museum and the stunning Italian Court Building.
Plzen is an Industrial town about 90 minutes from Prague, not stunningly beautiful or of great historic or religious signifigance, but it has the wonderful Pilsner Urquell brewery where Golden beer was invented.we in Britain now call it lager but it is where the term Pilsner or Pils originates from.A true mecca for any beer lover.
