Which area to stay in when in Rome?
My boyfriend and I will be in Rome in August and are trying to decide which area to stay in. I know that there are tons of these posts on here, but we specifically are looking for a place that is within walking distance to a large number of attractions. A lot of the posts that I am seeing are referring to walking distances to bus pickups/train stations, which is not what we're looking for. I am in a wheelchair and buses in Rome typically aren't accessible, so my options are either to walk or take taxis everywhere. Of course we'll have to take a taxi sometimes, but we'd like to be able to walk to a majority of places.
The last time I was in Rome my sister and I stayed near the Colosseum. It was a nice place, but it seemed really far from everything else and there weren't any restaurants or anything right around our hotel at all. While our trip wasn't THAT long ago (about 5 years) I don't recall the distances between areas and what exactly was around them - probably since we didn't walk them, but rather took a lot of taxis. We're looking for a place that is close to not only attractions, but maybe to some shops or restaurants that we could walk to at night after our sightseeing for the day is over.
Overall:
-Safe area
-Walking distance to restaurants & attractions
-$150 per night or less
Any specific hotel recommendations are welcome, although I am looking for a wheelchair accessible hotel so my options are a little more sparse. Thanks!

I love the Piazza Navona/Pantheon area. Dozens of restaurants are close, it's very central. I usually point out that it's good for bus connections, but there is a taxi stand right outside the northern end of the square. Is your wheelchair motorized? If not, "walking" could be a challenge with the hills in Rome. That's another plus for the Piazza Navona area, though, it's flat around there.

Anything in the Pantheon, Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona areas would be safe, walking distance to restaurants and attractions (though often on cobblestone streets). The problem may be your budget, although many hotels and B&Bs have lower rates in August.
Go to www.venere.com, enter your dates and budget, choose the areas I mentioned, and see what comes up. Do it with both hotels and B&Bs. Guest ratings are more reliable than star ratings.

No, it isn't motorized, its a small manual chair. As for the hills, thats what the boyfriend is for ;-), haha. Thanks for the info guys! I do remember the Piazza Navona being close to a lot of things, so I will definitely look into that and the other areas that Zerlina suggested. Knowing that the taxi stand is right in that area is a good factor as well!

I also think the Trevi Fountain, Pantheon area is the most central and lovely area to stay. Albergo Cesari is a great location and has a handicap accessible room. Near the Trevi Fountain is the Hotel Accademia with 2 handicap accessible rooms. You can check these out here...

Agree about Piazza Navona/Campo di Fiori and Pantheon area -- we've usually stayed near Pantheon though next trip will be near Trastevere/Vatican due to finding a good B&B. If you do smaller hotel or b&b I'd definitely check on the lift situation.

After a lot of research, we rented an apartment for the week right off of Piazza Navona. It is a great area with lots of local shops and early morning markets.. we purchased food and cooked a meal a day in the apartment.. Everything is really within walking distance.. especially if you like to walk.. wear good shoes .. those old Roman cobblestones will take a tole on your feet..
