Which Area to Stay in Rome
 

I'm searching on the big sites Priceline, Orbitz, etc for hotels to stay in Rome. Which area would be great to stay in for close access to the major attractions? I see Priceline divides into Vatican, Central, North, West, etc....Help? Thanks.

We loved staying at the Hotel Lancelot near the colliseum. Check it out on tripadvisor and their website.

try to stay in the Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Campo die Fiori or Trestevere area.

I suggest the choosing the "Central" Option on Priceline.

Depends upon how much you like to eat and walk. I.e., the best way to work off all those delicious Italian calories is by walking your little tushie off. In which case, there's no need to stay right next to the Coliseum or right next to the Vatican or whatever! EVERYthing is within walking distance of everything else -- assuming you enjoy walking.

That said, I have stayed in and loved the Pantheon area, the Centro Storico, Piazza Reppublica, and just recently in Trastevere. Each neighborhood is unique, each has its advantages. Rome is so wonderful -- you can't go wrong, I guarantee it!

I stayed this past month near the Termini train station in Rome. It makes sense, metro stations and busses connection are great, and if you need to travel on train/to the airport- it's really helpful too. But on the downside, the areas around Termini tend to be... erm... 'untidy'.

I have been wondering about the area around the termini. We are booked somewhat close. Do you thing ghe hotels in that area are ok.

Why not post the address? It makes a difference what side of the train station you are on.

If you are using Priceline, the only possible zone I'd consider is Central, but even that might give you a hotel that isn't central at all. The other zones could give you an extremely inconvenient hotel location.

If you have choices, choose someplace other than termini area. The other locals are more quaint and clean(er) and you are in the heart of everything. You can catch cabs or buses just about anywhere.

As you exit the train station, it's to the left. The place looks a little run-down, but I did expect it, since I rad some reviews before leaving. I mentioned in another post, meeting 'dog poos' along the way, it was exactly here that it happened. I believe it's better off in the surrounding areas.

any place BUT near Termini

Nex time, I'm staying in Trosteve, but that's exactly the kind of environment I enjoy. Its not for everyone.

Personally, I'd never stay near Termini, and I'm not hugely picky.
For a first time visit, I'd opt for something central. I like the Piazza Navona, Campo die Fiori areas best. My last two trips to Rome I stayed in Trastevere and just loved it, but I'mnot sure it's the best option for a first timer.

What hotels did you stay in in Trastevere? Piazza Navona? Campo di Fiori?

We stayed at the top of the Spanish Steps and loved it!

same here: top of the Spains Steps was great ! The view at dusk is fantastic.
Easy walk to Navona but also to elegant Via Veneto .

I have just booked trastevere area for end of May three nights. B&B Arco del Lauro www.arcodellauro.it do a search on fodors and trip advisor fantastic reviews about Lorenza the owner and areas great location. these reveiws did it for me I made contact with Lorenza and what a lovely person I can't wait to meet her. I booked straight away. this is our first time to Rome and so pleased we will be in the trastevere area sounds perfect for us. only 120euro per night also.

To answere jag1jag1, the Navona hotels I've stayed at are the Teatro di Pompeo and the D'Ínghilterra; near campo dei Fiori I stayed at Il Rinascimento; and in Trastevere the Trilusso Palace.

And I actually forgot my favorite of them all - the Modigliani near the Spanish Steps.
