Which area to stay in Rome?
 

Fodorites, I need your help again.

On the first visit we stayed at the Due Torri near the P. Navona. It was a great location and hotel, but we are debating where to stay in Rome for our second visit.

We can book the Hotel Santa Maria located in Trastevere. The hotel is a bit further out, but only a short walk away from from the main attractions.

Would anybody recommend the Trastevere as a good place to stay in Rome?

I have not stayed in Trastevere but always wander that way for dinner while in Rome. I have heard all good things about the Santa Maria.

My favorite location in Rome is Pantheon Square so most of my stays have been there at the Minerve or Del Senato.

On my previous three trips to Rome, I have stayed in the Piazza Navona or Campo dei Fiori/ Piazza Farnese areas and been happy with them. I will be staying in Trastevere for the month of February,so I'll let you know when I get back!

I love Trastevere - lots of little cobblestone streets to explore, good restaurants and people who actually live there just going about their business - good street market, very authentic Roma. It is just a short walk to most everything. Hopefully I will be going back in March.

Would you mind telling me just how much of a walk it is?? Say, from Trastevere to Pza Navona/Trevi/Sp Steps?

I keep going back and forth as to whether to consider hotels in Trastevere in early May. (Both hotels are near of Pizza Santa Maria.)

Well depending on how fast you walk, which route you take and how many gelato stops you make on the way, I think it takes me about 10 min to P. Navona, another 5 to Pantheon and maybe another 5-8 to Trevi and another 5 to Spanish Steps. St. Pete's is about 20 min. and the Forum and Coll. about 20 min. You can also catch the tram to Largo Arg. where you can catch buses to many different areas. To me, staying in Trastevere is like "going home" after a long day of seeing Roma.

Gosh, that's nothing! In Paris we figure we averaged walking 12 to 18 miles a day!

I think your info puts Trastevere back on the list. Do you perhaps know anything about Villa della Fonte in Trastevere?

Barb, I imagine that you were not walking but leaping in the air?
5 minutes walk to Piazza di Spagna? or 8 minutes to Trevi Fountain?
My hotel was just off Via del Corso, close to the Rinascente, it sure took me much longer than a 5 minutes walk to reach the Spanish Steps, or Trevi, considering that I was much closer than Trastevere..:)

I have rented an apartment from flatinrome.com. It's a studio on Via Garibaldi near the Ponte Sisto,so it's just around the corner from Campo dei Fiori. The price was great 1000E for the month plus electricity.I'll let you know how it is.

Kismetchimera: I actually have been known to leap in the air when in Rome, because I love it so much. I meant it takes me about 30 min to get to Spanish Steps from Trastevere if you add it all up --- and if I don't stop or if I'm not just stolling. I walk everywhere and probably average about 8- 10 mi a day - probably not as much as I walk in Paris, because I think Rome is a little more compact. As I said before, there is just something about crossing the river to Trastevere and just feeling the intensity of the city slow down a little. To me, it is so worth an extra 10 min. of walking. I rent through RealRome.

Campo dei Fiori for sure. lively square and great sunday market. there's so much good eats right there. we rented an apartment there...so good. renting is also much cheaper than hotels.
