Which area of Rome - Is Vatican central?
 

Ok so we have (I think) decided to go to Rome for a long weekend at the end of November.

I can get a couple of good deal on accomline for the Vatican area but wondered if this was central to sights and restaurants?

Could anyone help?

The restaurants we are looking at are:

Columbus Hotel Rome
Domus Mariae Hotel Rome

Any info about the hotels or area would be a great help.

The Vatican is not central.

The area around the Pantheon would, I think, be better for you.

We stayed in the Vatican area, and while it's not central as far as an easy walk to most sights, we were able to get everywhere on either the metro or buses. And there are plenty of good, inexpenses places to eat (just make sure you get a few blocks away from the vatican to eat)

We'd stay in that area again.

Ira is correct with his suggestion to stay in the Pantheon area. Is it convenient to most of the important sights in Rome, and not too far from the Vatican. We walked everywhere from our hotel, Albergo del Senate.

We stayed in Prati which is across the Tiber River and nearby the Vatican. We were able to walk to the major sights mentioned above and didn't need a bus or taxi. The Vatican itself is a bit further than the distance from Prati.

There is Hotel dei Mellini, a very nice hotel, that's located in Prati. We stayed a couple blocks away at Visconti Palace Hotel. It was pretty good. Now these two hotels are related. Prati is considerably much quieter than the Pantheon area so if you want to be where all the action is then the Pantheon and Spanish Steps areas are ideal.

We stayed at Hotel Columbus the first two times we went to Rome. It is located right by St. Peter's and is very comfortable. We found it to be a good location for a first time Rome visit. If you are just going to be there for a weekend, you won't have much time for more than a visit to St. Peter's, the Vatican, and Castel San Angelo.

Of course you can also walk to the Pantheon area, maybe 20-25 minutes, or take a taxi from right in front of St. Peter's for 5 Euro.

Then another time when you will be in Rome for a longer visit , try staying near the Pantheon or Piazza Navona. It takes many visits to see Rome.

Yes, there are some neat restaurants a couple of blocks away. Go inside the walls of old Rome. I might be able to find the name of a couple that we especially enjoyed in that area.

The Vatican is not central but the Rome metro is close by and will take you to central areas swiftly. Because you're going in November, you should be able to get good deals in areas near the Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna) or Pantheon.
