Which area & Which Hotels In Rome
 

I'm planning a trip to Rome in early March. It's been suggested that I look into hotels near the Spanish Steps. Is that good advice or not?
If so which hotels are worth looking into?
If not then what area would you suggest and which hotels?

I personally really like the area, because it's easy to walk around to different attractions, but is also near the Metro, so if you prefer to take the subway, you can do that easily.

There are others here who prefer the Piazza Navonna area--each after their own tastes.

The hotel is clean and well-run, the staff friendly, the rates reasonable, and IMO the location is ideal.

Susan, what is your price range? That will help posters suggest hotels.

Everybody is different, thank goodness. Some like the area near the Steps while others such as myself like the Via Veneto; still others prefer Trastevere.

If you haven't ever been to Rome it is hard to know what you, personally, will like or not like so going witrh a price range is probably as good as any.

In terms of being "near" things..well, that depends on your interests and what you want to be "near" and why. I find Rome to be quite walkable from a variety of locations but I also enjoy public transport and happily catch a taxi when I feel like it.

Good luck with your search and just remember that location recommendations vary considerably with the recommender's own priorities.

My mom and I recently stayed at Albergo Santa Chiara right behind the Pantheon we loved that area, never had to use public transportation, even walked to the Vatican. It was 190 euros a night, expensive but we enjoyed it (Get a courtyard room for less noise)

I'm another fan of the Santa Chiara, imo the location can't be better. Equalled perhaps, but not bettered.
I think the Pantheon/Campo dei Fiori/Piazza Navona area is my central area of choice for hotels and for walking access to many other areas.
However, the Spanish Steps area does have a convenient metro stop.

Campo dei Fiori. but why not look into renting an apartment. you get a totally different experience in rome. you get fairly close to the locals. some cities hotels are fine, but rome an apartment is great.

the metro in roma is not very useful for site seeing...comfy shoes. or rent a moped...even more roman. when in roma...
