Which are "market days" in France?
I'm aware Sarlat, Dinan & Periguex are Saturday (?), St Remy and Rocamadour Wednesday (?).
Other towns in Normandy, Burgundy, Dordogne? |
Also Loire Valley?
|
You're kidding, right?
I can tell you about the places local to me; and the first thing I do when I arrive anywhere is get the leaflet from the Tourist Office with all the market days listed. But memorising them? However, France does it for you. http://www.francemag.com/frmag/conte...ault.asp?id=15 |
Patricia Wells' Food Lover's Guide to France lists market days in major towns.

In the Dordogne:
Sarlat has a market Wednesday, too(smaller than the Saturday one). Le Bugue has its big one Tuesday and small one Saturday. Lalinde is Thursday. I think Domme ha a small one Thursday, too. Montignac is Friday. There are a zillion others. As for the rest of France, make that mega-zillions. Check when you get there. |
The only constant seems to be that markets are never held on a Monday.
|
You are in luck. San Remy market day is Wednesday.
|
With the greatest of respect, how many market days do you have to attend before you get tired of feeling up the peppers and tomatoes? Sorry..couldn't resist..have a great trip....it sounds a heck of a lot better than trying to be a hotel snob!
|
To answer your perceived facetious question--I NEVER get tired of looking at the French markets. They are just a total delight and always a major part of our trip. :O)
|
Never on Monday, you say, Hanl? Try Trégastel on the Côtes-d'Armor, Brittany.
|
I stand corrected Ron. I've never come across a Monday market but there do seem to be a few, especially in the tourist season.
I'd beware of fish at a Monday market as it's unlikely to be fresh (the fishing boats don't usually go out on Sundays). |
Sheila, thanks for that site. what a nifty thing.
Notice, however, that one of my favorite markets in Paris isn't on it--Barbes Market just below Sacre Couer hill. Does anyone know if it has another name? |
Julie, are you referring to the market on Boulevard de la Chappelle? It stretches along beneath the above-ground metro line from the Barbes-Rochechouart intersection to la Chappelle.
|
There used to be a Monday market in Les Eyzies, but it seems nobody came to it, so they abandoned it. I think the French in general, at least in the provinces, don't think of Monday as a day to do errands.
