Which airport is closest to Heathrow?
 

Might be using Easyjet for a connecting flight our of Heathrow to Edinburgh in august. Have choice of the three other airports. Any experience in which is closest and easiest to transfer?

There are four others: London City, Stanstead, Luton and Gatwick so I am not sure which one you are missing from your list. I'm also not sure I understand your question.

In my opinion any transfer like this is an unwanted hassle. Is there a way to avoid a transfer? Why are you having to make a transfer and how come you have a choice of airports to transfer to?

I haven't done a transfer in London but you'll be looking at least and hour travel time whatever other airport and route you take.

Houdi has to transfer because Easyjet and most no frills airlines don't fly out of Heathrow. He/she is trying to save money on a flight, and probably trying to figure out if the transfer will eat up the savings.

and the answer is not proximity, I think, but ease. If Gatwick is one of the three, then take it. There's a shuttle bus. Nonrof the others is easy at all.

www.flybmi.co.uk often has good deals from London Heathrow to Edinburgh, especially if you can avoid travelling on the weekend but you may not have this flexibility. I just put in sample dates and got a return fare of under £50 including taxes.

Sorry, I got confused before because I thought the Easyjet flight was from Heathrow to Edinburgh but of course they only fly from Gatwick, Stanstead and Luton (the other three!)

I would assume that Luton is the closest airport to Heathrow, but Gatwick has more frequent links.

In any event, I would NOT recommend such an itinerary. If you do it anyway, plan AT LEAST a 6 hour layover.

Did you check BMI? They have good fares and fly out of Heathrow.

Why don't you just stay with BA and Heathrow? I don't know your dates but you could get a R/T on British Airlines from about 60BP and up. Once you consider the transfers and time wasted, you will probably be better off with flying from LHR to EDI on BA.
Go to www.BA.com and on top of the home page on the right side, pick United Kingdom as the country of choice.

Thanks everyone for your very good advice. The hastle factor certainly seems too great to transfer airports just to take advantage of the lower prices on Easyjet. I guess I had just been very frustrated that after checking all the airlines that fly from the US, including British Midland, the cheapest RT from Washington was $838 on BA. I might take the suggestion of purchasing an add-on from London to Edinburgh.

Look into flying from the States to Glasgow instead. From your comment it seems you don't want to spend any time in London. You can often get very good fares directly into Glasgow, and Edinburgh is a very short journey by train, bus or car.
