OK - a travel card is just a type of fare plan. Like a weekly travelcard. That would be loaded on an Oyster card. No reason to get a 'visitor' Oyster. Just get your oyster once you are in London and load a weekly travelcard on it.

Then at the end of your first week load some more ££ on your Oyster. Whether that should be another weekly travelcard or some pay-as-you-go £ amount mainly depends on if you'll be in London and using transport the full 5 days or less. For 5 days, a weekly travelcard is normally the best deal.

If there's more than one of you then successive 7 day Travelcards bought at a train station ticket office will be the best option as that allows you to use the offers on daysoutguide.com

If you are traveling solo -- just get an Oyster.

If there are more than one of you, then we can then explain the details of the paper travel cards and Days Out discounts.

But that unnecessarily complicates things if you are alone, which I assumed because you said "1" and "I" multiple times. If in fact it is "we" and "which ones" should "we buy" -- then we'll make your eyes glaze over explaining how/where/why to get paper travelcards.

If "I" is "I" then an Oystercard is the best option - but for 12 days you load consecutive 7 day zone 1-2 Travelcards (assuming you are staying in central London) onto it and another £15 for travel outside those zones.
