Where's the best area to go wine tasting in Spain for a honeymoon?
 

I'm planning a honeymoon and looking for the most romantic, beautiful area of Spain to go wine tasting with great wine, great food, charming/interesting towns. We're planning to go in the summer - is that a bad time to go?

The summer is fine. The best wine tasting will be in the Rioja, Ribera and Navarra, especially for great wine, food and charming/interesting towns.

Not sure if you can always mix food wine and charm, but if pushed Rioja and Ribera would be up there in my top 5. I might also look to Barcelona which has the Torres HQ and the main spanish Cava town (Freixenet et al) all within a short commute.

Living in a wine region and taking a great deal of interest in this subject I have to be honest and say you are asking almost impossible questions.
What is romantic? For me there is nothing romantic in wine areas.
I personally find wine area on the whole rather flat. The one I live is is not, it is steeply terraced. Some others in Galicia are also located in more hilly areas.
Everywhere you go in Spain you will find good food and interesting villages and cities.
There is a total of 67 Denominación De Origen Or Denominación de Origen Calificada areas in Spain.
Maybe you could help us a bit where do you land and leave Spain?
What mod of transport will you be using?
How long are in in Spain for?
What is your preference when it comes to wine?

Thanks so much Robert! The hotel looks amazing - great recommendation. Do you recommend Getaria? I know nothing about it other than I love how it looks from the photos.
Any other charming towns along the coast you would recommend? We'd like to go to a few while we're there.

The Basque coast from Cantabria to the Pays Basque is dotted with great little villages where you could be lost for months, but for what you're looking for, Getaria makes a good base and the Hotel Iturregi is hard to beat, but there are several more that come close. Again, you can refer to Maribel's Guide to the País Vasco for more information and recommendations. She also has a guide to the Pays Basque, where we have spend a lot of time over the years and will be back this summer before heading to Fiesta in Pamplona.

If you're interested in a great place to stay on the French size, then I can highly recommend the Chateau de Lamothe (www.chateau-de-lamothe.eu) in the village of Moumour in the Béarn, 1-1/2 hours from Biarrtiz.

Getaria is beautiful. San Sebastian will have more nightlife and things to do etc. Getaria has the beach, views, food and vineyards that produce a great white wine. Robert gives great advice, read maribelsguides Basque region for sure.
