Where would you stay in the Alps for Christmas?

Hi Everyone!
Beginning to plan a white Christmas with our daughter who live in the UK. We want to meet somewhere in the Alps to stay a few days and perhaps ski. We are Aussies so a white Christmas would be a treat for us. Can anyone suggest avillage where it would be nice to spend Christmas... in Europe, perhaps Austria or The Italian Alps?
Thanks for any help on offer!
Rosie

Hmmmmmm! Let me think about this one.

You have those wonderful Christmas Markets springled across Austria and Germany. But you did say you wanted a white Christmas with skiing. So you need to go higher in altitude for that time of year.

I think a wonderful, villiage in the Austrian Alps would be the town of LECH! (or maybe car free OBERLECH).

You have a 'spine' across the Austrian alps of wonderful ski towns (Lech, Oberlech, Zurs, St. Christoff, and down to the biggest of all St. Anton.

If you want more of a town first and skiing second, then maybe Garmish, Mittenwald, Innsbruck might fit the bill.

Should be fun planning this!

Hi Rosie - I always give the same answer when anyone asks this - VAL GARDENA in the Italian Dolomites.

SELVA is one of the top resorts in Europe (- linked to the spectacular Sella Ronda circuit). Neighbouring ORTISEI is an equally good base - I've been there in December last the past 5 years

Have a look:

Dolomites Superski is the biggest ski carousel in Europe, I believe. Val Gardena hosts the Sass Long world championship downhill just before Xmas.

Some useful links:

Hope this helps ...

Thanks for the help Steve. Can you tell me if the snow is fairly reliable in December in the area you mentioned? My daughter thought it might not be a high enough elevation for skiing that early in the season.
Thanks again

Lech is VERY popular at Christmas (and deservedly so). You may find that the better hotels are already booked or will require a stay longer than you'd planned.
You should narrow your search and start contacting hotels ASAP to see who has rooms available for Christmas.

Rosie - They guarantee the slopes will be open for Xmas (- the season usually starts a fortnight before) - so you don't need to worry.

Last Xmas the snow came early, the year before it didn't - but the slopes were still open as usual. It's one of the top ski areas in Italy so is very popular at Xmas.

Selva (- the main ski resort) and Ortisei (- where I usually stay) are down in the valley (1550m and 1200m respectively) - but the lifts go up to 2000m+
