Where to stop in Switzerland on my way from Torino, Italy to Paris??
I'm planning my trip to Europe in a few weeks and would like to stop somewhere in Switzerland on my way from Italy to Paris, but have no clue what would be the most convenient as well as fun. Any ideas??

Hello MiamiNole,
Can you tell us if youre taking the train or driving?
I played with a few train connections between Torino & Paris & various towns in Switzerland, and I couldnt find a great and obvious choice. There is a five-hour direct TGV link between Torino and Paris, so I used that as the standard for convenience. If you break up your trip in Montreux, Zermatt, Bern, or Luzern, each of those trips is longer than five hours and requires quite a few changes.
The TGV does go through Lyon, so that might be a convenient stop if you dont mind missing Switzerland on this trip. Alternately, you could go to Annecy?
You can check train connections at www.rail.ch.
If youre driving, I say stop in Montreux.
Best of luck!

MiamiNole,
Sorry for the stupid question, but what is 'fun' for you?
Shopping, hiking, museums, eating, sleeping....
And yes, we would have to know how you will be travelling.
The above suggestions are a good start.

Hi MiamiNole,
We will be leaving for Rome March 17th for only two days. Then we fly to Frankfurt Germany where we will pick up a car and drive to Lucerne Switzerland for two days. From there we go to Paris for four days. I wish that we had 15 days like you.
Are you renting a car? The tallest mountains of Switzerland have snow year round, so you will certainly be able to feel, let alone see snow. I did research on Switzerland and most Fodorites voted for Lucerne as a unique and beautiful place. We will also drive into Lauterbrunnen valley and maybe take a short train ride up to Wengen or Murren.
Have you considered taking the Glacier express from St. Moritz to Zermitt(I think that this is the route). I would take this train route ,which is surely one of the most breath taking in the world. Utilize Michelin.com if you are driving. This site gives excellent driving directions as well as must see sites along the way. Restaurants and hotels are also rated.
Where are you staying in Rome and Paris. We will be very near the Spanish steps and near Place du Nation in Paris. I can sniff out a bargain like a bloodhound and have found some tremendous deals. We will be staying in a 3 star hotel (Rossli)in Stalden, Sarnen, Switzerland for about $40 for a single. Stalden is located between Interlaken and Lucerne.
I am very excited and suppose that you are too. Have fun and email me directly if you have questions. Tim

Hello MiamiNole,
From Turin your most direct train route wouldn't actually take you into Switzerland. The route is via Bardonecchia into France. On that route the nicest place has to be ANNECY as Swandav2000 suggested (- a short detour off the main line).
If you wanted to go through Switzerland by train, the shortest detour would be via Domodossola on the Brig-Montreux-Geneva route. This means back-tracking to Milan, or joining the train in the area of Lake Maggiore, e.g. Stresa.
On that route, MONTREUX would be a nice stop IMO. You could also take a wonderful side trip up to ZERMATT from Brig for a view of the Matterhorn.
An alternative route from Brig would be up to INTERLAKEN, from where you could visit the lovely Bernese Oberland/Wengen/Lauterbrunnen area as has been suggested. That would probably be my choice.
The route via St Moritz would be MUCH longer.
It really depends how much of a detour you want to take ...
