Where to stop for the day between Rothenburg and Munich?

We are going from Rothenburg to Munich by train and would like to stop somewhere along the way for 5 hours or so. Nuernberg works well, as does Augsburg. Wurzburg and Bamberg are even possibilities.

Would any of these cities suit a short stop like this? Any other places you might suggest that would complement our itinerary? On this trip, we are also visiting the Rhine/Mosel area, Dresden and Berlin.

I can only vouch for Nuremberg, as we have yet to visit the other places that you mentioned (although they are all supposed to be great). We flew into and out of Nuremberg as the flights were much cheaper than flights into Munich. We spent the last night of our trip in Nuremberg and took the train from our airport hotel to the old city center and were very impressed. I don't know what we were expecting, but it definitely rated above our expectations. The old town is great and would be perfect for a few hours. Its pedestrian only and filled with interesting shops and great restaurants, as well as some great museums. For more info, check out http://tourismus.nuernberg.de/. However, I'm not sure about the parking situation (I'm assuming their are garages around town but not sure) as we just took public transportation into town.

Good luck!

We are going by train, so parking is no issue. Thanks for the link, I will check it out, and am glad to hear that it would be a good place to stop for a couple of hours!

Another vote for Nuernberg. My wife and I spent one day there and were really surprised at how walkable and pleasant the city has become -- even in the rain.

No other comments about the other options?

I am guessing that you are connecting in Wuerzburg, as this is in a different direction from Rburg to Munich. If you are connecting thru Wburg, it is an option that I think is just as good as Nurmburg, maybe a bit better. Both Nburg and Wburg are better options than Bamburg or Augsburg, in my opinion.

If you do Wburg, make sure to tour the Residenz (which is right in the town and is NOT the impressive castle up on the hill beside the river). Very neat tour.

We liked Bamberg and Augsburg better than Wurzburg and Nurnberg. Though they are all well worth visiting--it is a matter of personal interest.
