where to stop for one night between Lauterbrunnen and Mittenwald?

hi all,
just spent the most amazing three nights in Lauterbrunnen, I've read so much but wow, the valley is just beautiful and when you get up into the mountains, breathtaking (almost literally).
Now I'm heading to Mittenwald, but was wondering if anyone has any brilliant suggestions for the one night in between the two.
Was thinking about that outdoor museum I've heard about but haven't worked out exactly where that is yet. Will check more out about that this evening.
We are trying to avoid the toll roads and take scenic routes. So far that's worked out great. Particularly driving on the wrong side of the road in an unfamilar car!
Thanks for any advice,
JT :)

"outdoor museum" in Brienz?
Ballenberg Freilicht museum?

Mokka4, tks for that, just remembered I hadn't replied!
yest thats the one, we went today. We drove the north side of the lake around to Brienz, lovely. The weather for the museum was perfect and I was really pleased that each building had a description in English too, our girls loved all the animals as well!
the stop over has ended up in Luzern due to tired ness and sore feet! Thanks to both for the comments.

Berchtesgaden is not between Lauterbrunnen and Mittenwald. Way beyond Mittenwald.

For a change of scenery, somewhere on Lake Constance/Bodensee would be a good idea IMO. Meersburg comes to my mind, Lindau is another good option and a bit closer to Mittenwald.

If you want to stay in Switzerland and a picture-perfect small town: Stein am Rhein.

Well, you could have gone to Brienz whilst you were in Lauterbrunnen. If you return in the future: take the 20-minute train ride to Interlaken, walk to the right of Interlaken Ost, and get on the boat to Brienz.

Obertsdorf, nestled in at the foot of the Bavarian Alps
And Lindau - old town jutting out in Lake Contance
Berchtesgaden would be overhooting Mittenwald by quite a bit I think if you go via Germany.

Fuessen and Mad Ludwig's fantasty castles would be on the way to Mittenwald

The previous are if you go via Germany

Via Austria there are some famous ski resorts like St Anton and even of course Innsbruck though it is on Mittenwald's doorstep.
