Where to stop between Paris and Munich?
 

Hi Folks!

I've got a wonderful 10 nights planned in Paris in October, and I live south of Munich. I've just been thinking it might be nice to stop somewhere for four nights between the two. Right now I'm thinking of Riquewehr or Lindau.

I'm wondering if anyone can comment on what each/either place looks like at the end of October. I'm not asking about the weather -- as I know how to adjust for that -- but what the scenery looks like. For instance, I adore Montreux on Lake Geneva in the fall because there are still plenty of flowers, and the trees are red and gold as they turn. However, Montreux sits in a micro-climate that's warmer than nearby places.

So, can anyone give me some ideas what Lindau or Riquewehr might look like for flowers and vegetation? I like to spend most of my time outside, walking or hiking or biking.

Riquewehr IMO is more up your alley if into walking or biking - it is one of a string of small wine villages along the Route des vins alsace - I have biked thru it and other small towns - so nice - even in October when you may even get some fall color - Colmar just a few miles away is a large regional town that deserves at least a day alone - one of the nicest regional towns in France - Strasbourg is a gem too - a real gem for some reason does not get the respect IMO it deserves.

Lindau I love too - on an island sticking out in to the Bodensee and though it may have flowers it is not in the wonderfully wooded setting of Riquewehr where the tree-carpeted mountains backdrop everything - lots of G.R. Grand Randonee hiking trails - get a good Michelin map with them on it or an ING - official government mapping agency map that is actually a bit bigger scale than the 1:200,000 Michelin maps.

Plus in fall the wine/grape harvest will be in full swing in the Alsace, adding excitement.

Lindau is isolated - to do anuy hiking you'd have to get first off the peninsula, etc. But Lindau is one of my favorite towns in Germany.

Unfortunately, however, after I posted this question, I committed to teach a face/face class here in Garmisch, and the class starts just two days after my return from Paris. So, as it happens, I won't be able to travel while coming home.

That's bad news for my soul .. . but good news for my wallet, lol!

I hear that that class has been transferred to Interlaken!

If you want to see flowers, Mainau can't be beat. I would vote for the Bodensee and visit Mainau (you can also visit Lindau, Konstanz, Meersburg, etc.). There are lots of hiking, biking, and walking opportunities around the lake.

Although I also love the Alsace...less flowers but lots of vineyards, biking/hiking, and wine tasting opportunities.

You really can't go wrong either way. We were in both places this Spring and loved them both.
