Where to stop between Izmir and Istanbul?

I'm going to Turkey for my honeymoon in early October and starting in Istanbul, then going to Cappadocia, then Antalya and Oludeniz. We have booked a car rental in Antalya and are driving it back to Istanbul. (We know how expensive gas is, but we're doing it anyway.)

I'm looking just for advice on things to see or good places to go on our way back between Fethiye to Istanbul. We only have 4 days, so nothing lengthy. We know Ephesus and Troy are on the way, but will only be able to do them if we can accommodate them around places to stay and wouldn't want more than a day in each place, and don't have our hearts set on either.

Any advice would be great! Thanks and happy travels

There are a number of routes from Fethiye to Istanbul.

The following trip report has Fethiye - Birgi - Salhli - Iznik - Istanbul with overnights at only Birgi and Iznik.

Oh, please do see Ephesus. It is amazing. If you are at all interested in history and Greek/Roman ruins (Ephesus is both) it is fabulous. We stayed nearby in a wonderful hotel in a Sirince, a cute if touristy wine town in the hills above Selcuk. The hotel, the Nisanyan, was really charming--a collection traditional Turkish houses (mostly new, but made to look old). The breakfasts on a terrace were a delight--plus our little house had its own porch overlooking the hills and pool. We had dinner one night in the restaurant, and it was delicious. We took a shuttle into Selcuk, then caught a bus to the Ephesus--easy. If interested, you can also stop by the little house that was said to be the last home of the Virgin Mary. True or not, I found it very moving.
This was our favorite hotel in Turkey.

We also stayed a few nights in Bodrum, (pretty town, wrong time of year, alas), and drove between Bodrum and Selcuk, stopping at more ruins along the way.

Istanbul is magical. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding--I am sure you will have an amazing honeymoon!
