Where to stay outside Stuttgart

We are departing from Stuttgart after a stay in Southern Bavaria (near Ludwigs castles). Can anyone suggest a nice town to stay in for the night no greater than 1 hour from Stuttgart?

Tu(e)bingen, delightful smaller but not small town known for its prestigious university - about 45 mins by train. In a nice natural area. Tubingen - with two dots above the u.

Esslingen am Neckar and Tubingen are nice and well under your 1 hour goal.

I always recommend that people visit Bad Wimpfen, a lovely but smaller and less touristy version of Rothenburg, located on the Neckar River. It is exactly 1 hour from Stuttgart, mostly on the motorway.

www.badwimpfen.de (there is an English version)

We stayed at the Hotel Neckarblick, just a short walk from the Haupstrasse.

I can't tell you how impressed we were with this town. It's the perfect size for a long afternoon visit with it's old walls and towers and half timbered buildings.

I've been reading your posts bettyk, and Bad Wimpfen is on our "next trip to Germany" list.

Rufus, we were so surprised by BW. It's a little diamond in the rough. We did not see a single American in 2 days nor many other tourists either and this was in May. We met some lovely Germans who heard us talking and wanted to practice their English. Everyone was very nice. Check out this website for another first hand testimonial:

Thanks - I'll clarify a bit. We'll be coming from the Fussen area, so probably won't want to go North of Stuttgart as I believe the airport is South. I've looked at Tuebingen so will check that out again - other suggestions?
