Where to stay on the Algarve?
 

Going to the Algarve and wanted to know your opinion as to the best city in which to stay during the summer

Faro, Albufiera, Lagos or other. We want beaches, shopping, historic sites.

Do you have a rental car? If so, Albufeira would be my choice. You can access most other places from it.

I don't like to be with too many other tourists and Tavira was recommended to me on the grounds that it is very pleasant but not a 'proper resort.' Whatever the thinking behind this, I enjoyed my brief time there and would cheerfully stay longer,

We just returned from a 9 day trip to the Algarve. We stayed in Lagos, but had a rental car and explored most of the Algarve including many little fishing towns. We thought that the Algarve had some of the best beaches we've ever been too, but our favorite area was right near Lagos and Luz. The rocky outcrops and seastacks made for wonderful backdrops while we were on the beaches. We also enjoyed the town of Alvor which has a lovely smaller fishing docks area, but also has loads of apartments a bit further back. If you do decide to stay in Lagos, we'd highly recommend the apartment we stayed in...the Edificio da Nora. It was about 10 minutes walk to the old town, but a perfect location and the best accommodations we've ever had on a trip. I found at least 3 people renting out holiday apartments there and our particular one was fabulous with an amazing balcony.
