Where to stay near Cadiz at the end of March

During our time in Andalusia I would like to include a stay near Cadiz and the Costa del la Luz for 5 or 6 days at the end of March next year. Besides Cadiz I've seen reference to Jerez de la Frontera, El Puerto de Santa Maria and also Sanlucar de Barrameda.

We will have a rental car so would like a location that will give us ease in driving for our planned day trips from our base.

Since it will be the end of March and probably not beach weather I'd like to stay within a short drive to the coast but not necessarily on the water. I'd like a location that has activities that can be done even if the weather is not ideal.

Will it be possible to find a location in that area that has Andalusian atmosphere with more of a small town feel, something we would enjoy after our time in Seville and Cordoba.

Thank you for any suggestions or comments. Deborah

If you are going to be that long in the area, then I would certainly consider staying in Cadiz for a couple of days, with our without a car. CathyM should be able to give you some excellent recommendations on the area.

Jerez would also make an excellent base for a few days. We spent a week there a couple of years ago in late March. You can take the train from Jerez to El Puerto and Sanlucar and will not need a car.

It depends on what you want (town with transport and lots going on versus small town to get away from it all), but I have heard wonderful things about Medina Sidonia. However, I also heard raves about El Puerto de Santa Maria, which was dismal. Cadiz may be the answer, as there are indoor attractions.
I'd consider Sanlucar for proximity to the park, but you'll have a car anyway.
Vejer felt full of expats, but it has a nice location.

Thanks Robert, I was wondering about Jerez after I read that Rick Steves describes it as having a lively old center surrounded by a big-city mix of industry and dusty concrete suburbs. I like the idea of a lively center but less so the industry and dusty concrete. Where did you stay in Jerez and what did you enjoy your time there in March? Thanks, Deborah

Yorkshire, thanks, dismal in March could be very dismal indeed We just spent 7 rainy days in Burgundy in Sept and without the chance to sit outside and enjoy the lovely towns around Beaune I think dismal would describe how I felt!!

One of the risks we take traveling in off season is unpleasant weather and both trips this year were plagued by unusually heavy rains; not fun in Burdundy nor at the Lakes Maggiore and Como in Italy. I'm hoping our luck will be better in 2014 regarding weather. Deborah

We stayed at Hotel Chancilleria (hotelchancilleria.com/), which was excellent, but there is also the Third Floor, Hotel Argantonio, (www.hotelargantonio.es/third-floor.html), depending on your budget.

We found Jerez interesting if you plan on spending a few days in the area. When we where there in March, there was not a drop of rain. It was cool, but bright and sunny when we had lunch on the beach in Sanlucar.
