Where to Stay in the Dordogne

My party of four adults is planning a trip to the Dordogne in May. Our thought is to rent a home or townhouse (Friday to Friday or Saturday to Saturday) in an interesting town. We would like for the town to be interesting itself and centrally located for day trips from there. What towns do you suggest? Any suggestions for rentals? Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Hi cw,

We liked Beynac-et-Cazenac. It's right on the river.

Others have liked La Roque Gageac, Sarlat, Castelnaud, St. Cyprien, Le Bugue, Carlux.

Just about anywhere within an hour's drive of Sarlat.

The Dordogne is quite popular. You had better reserve a place ASAP.

A couple of years ago we rented a place in La Roque Gageac for tow weeks and thought that it was close to pefect. However all the places mentioned by Ira are very attractive indeed, and very centrally located for day trips.

That's two weeks!

Love the Dordogne! We've stayed in Sarlat twice. Lovely town, many good restaurants & a wonderful Saturday market!

I posted a reply to this yesterday, but it seems to have been lost in the ether-net....anyway, highly recommend Sarlat. A charming, well-preserved village close to most everything you will want to see in the Dordogne. Highly recommend www.yourfriendsinfrance.org for accommodations. La Vigne would be perfect for 4 adults. Hosts Susan and Harry are very knowledgable and accommodating.

We loved Chateau de Monrecour just outside of Beynac. You can stay in the Chateau or in a gite on the grounds. www.monrecour.com

We spent a week at this small "hotel"

It was lovely, few minutes drive from Sarlat, which we LOVED, very central and they make a lovely breaky of homemade yogurts, breads and preserves. We would go back in a heartbeat.
