Where to stay in Sifnos?
 

My husband and I are planning a trip with another couple for a trip to Athens/Sifnos/Milos for October. We are staying at the Attalos Hotel in Athens but are not sure which village/ town to stay in on Sifnos. We would like at least a view of the ocean that is within walking distance of good restaurants and bars. Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on whether renting a car is necessary?

We are tossing up between Sifnos and Syros for our trip next year so I hope someone out there has an answer for you. We are considering Platyos Gialos.

Last September I stayed in the Windmill of Spithas in Artemonas (10 minutes from the centre). They have other apartments around the windmill. Quiet and great views. They can help with a car rent. www.windmill-villas.gr/index.htm

Sifnos in October is wonderfully peaceful, but in the evenings the beach villages (apart from the port, Kamares) are more or less deserted, and the bus service is cut right back, so to have a choice of places to eat you really need to stay in or near the main village, Apollonia, unless you do want to rent a car. The wonderful Gerontis rooms (often mentioned on this forum) would probably be ideal – fantastic view of the sea and islands, and an easy walk into Apollonia; also not far from Artemonas where there are two excellent restaurants, open even in October. (Try putting 'Serifos and Sifnos' in the search box at the top of the page, for a long thread posted about this time last year.) However, after the middle of October the Gerontis are usually away on their own annual trip, but there are other places nearby: finding rooms this late in the season won't be a problem.
Toni – you don't say when you'll be there, but the thread about Sifnos and Serifos might be helpful: I think it was originally about accommodation in May/June

My husband and I will be there the first week in June, and are renting through vrbo.com There were several choices on Siphnos available, believe it or not. We got a small house, suitable for two people, and it comes with a car! Just outside of Apollonia, walking distance to Platys Gialos, I am told (downhill--probably will take a bus back up the hill).
