Where to stay in Rome (for $150 a night or less)
 

We are going to Rome in April and I am trying to find a hotel for $150 or less. We would like to be in a central area that allows for easy walking to sights. I understand the Pantheon area may be ideal. Air conditioning would be nice and a private bath is a must. Anyone have any suggestions?

I would try and book something that looks good to you. When you make your selection write in the comment section of the booking form: put in your request for what your needs are price wise, dates, location ect. and they should get back with you by morning.

If your first request/selection is booked, then they will suggest another one based on your needs you have listed.

The Hotel Clarin in Via Palermo should fit into your budget. It is a standard 2 star and while the rooms aren't huge they have a private bathrooms and the facilities are quite modern. Via Palermo runs parallel with Via Nazionale and is close to Colosseum, Trevi Fountain etc etc etc, lots of restaurants and excellent shopping - walking distance from the train station.

You can look at their website at www.clarinhotel.com The website gives the price of a double room per night at 116 euros, but you may be able to negotiate better through a travel agent or by contacting them direct.

There was a similar thread on Rome neighborhoods and hotels (9/18) so thought I would list my same info here for you......

I recommend the Campo De' Fiori area in Rome as it is quite central to everything and within walking distance to all the major "sites" in Rome. (I just returned from Rome last week after 10 days there). I stayed at the HOTEL CAMPO DE' FIORI, Via del Biscione, 6 (tel 011-39-06-6874886/fax 011-39-06-6876003), located right in the middle of the Campo de' Fiori (from Termini, take Bus #64 to the Corso Vittorio Emanuele stop-McDonald's at corner-and walk across the blvd to the Campo area. I paid only 60 euros a night for a double room, and the rate included breakfast each morning (served from 7:30-10:00 am). It's a terrific find and they have a helpful front desk staff who speak English quite well. Note that the piazza can get quite lively (noisey) at night with strolling musicians and crowds out enjoying the night air -- I would recommend requesting a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor.

In the past, I have stayed at Albergo Della Lunetta, Piazza del Paradiso, 68 (located around the corner from Hotel Campo de' Fiori) but they were booked full this time. Their prices are equally reasonable (65 euros for single - owner will give you that price for a double if available, however, no breakfast is included in their rates).

Some other hotels in the Campo de' Fiori are:

Albergo Del Sole, Via del Biscione, 76 (011-39-06-68806873) Single w/o bath=65 euros, w/ bath=83 euros. Double w/o bath=95 euros, w/ bath=110 euros.

Hotel Pomezia, Via dei Chiavari, 17 (011-39-06-6861371) Single w/ bath=65 euros, Double w/ bath=85 euros, Triple w/ bath=100 euros.

Rates quoted above were for this month (September). It is my understanding that the rates increase during the Fall months. I would think, however, that April would be considered low season still, so the prices should be ok.

These hotels are all in the Campo area and the Pantheon is just a short walk northeast across Corso Vittorio Emanuele Blvd (10 mins from my hotel).

Even if a hotel has A/C it may not be available in April. We were in Rome in March during a hot spell. The hotel said the building doesn't make A/C avilable until May. I think that is common in Rome. You can probably email the hotel and ask them what their policy is.

try the hotel des artistes in rome. nice quiet neighborhood and a great rooftop garden.

We're staying at the Hotel Italia next week. It's 121E a night (that includes the incremental charge for A/C, and is with a private bath). When I get back, I'll include my opinion of the hotel in my trip report.

When in April are you going to be in Rome? I ask because the city is packed during Holy Week, which may explain why some places you've tried are booked already.

I believe Easter falls on April 11 next year. If you're going to be there around then, you may have to both up the ante and take what you can get.

Oops - had not thought about easter. We will be there April 17-19. Do you think people will still be there for easter a week later?

We stayed at the Hotel Napoleon in early March (http://www.napoleon.it) and were very happy with it. Rooms were newly refurbished and the breakfast (included) was great. For 2 rooms (husband and I in one, 18-year old son in smaller single room) the bill came to about $1000 for 4 nights.

Not sure if it's air-conditioned but in late April you may not need it.

One option I see mentioned very little here is staying in Convents/Monistaries. They may not have roof terrace bars and TV's w/CNN but they are clean, quiet, comfortable and generally much cheaper than hotels. Here are several sources of information.

We stayed at Hotel Alimandi block from Vatican Museum. Has A/C and elevator - very,very clean. Nice roof terrace breakfast and free shuttle from Airport -- $150. Not fancy but 5 star value for price. E-mail - [email protected].

I have stayed at Pensione Panda and they are a simple hotel but super clean, the best possible location close to Piazza de Spagna. Tried to book them now again ( 1 month before travelling ) but they are fully booked. Tried Hotel San Carlo, a very nice hotel with fabulous location ( around Euro 155 at www.venere.com ) but they are also full. Finally I managed to get a room at Hotel Diplomatic that was highly recommended by a friend. Other hotel around this $$ that my friends suggested:

Pensione Primavera
Hotel Homs
Casa Kolbe
Hotel Navona
Hotel Arenula

No matter what you choose, book months ahead!!!!

Ah, forgot to say that I am going to Rome next month, Oct 4. I dont understand why the hotels you mentioned are already booked for april. Make a search here at Fodors about Pensione Panda and San Carlo. Everybody says wonderful things about them. Good luck!
