Where to stay in Rome
My girlfriend and I will be staying 3 nights in Rome. What is the best section of the city to stay in for walking tours? Any specific hotel recommendations (mid-range budget)? Thanks.

Hi U,
A. Enter <Rome and Hotel> in the "search this forum" box. B. How much is "mid-range"? C. See Helpful Information: Italy 2 http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34568596 ((I)) |
The Centro Storico is among the better choices of location.
There are two definitions of mid-range: a) since the top hotels are above $700 and the bottom are rarely below $50, the "middle" is $300-450. Near the bottom of this range is Albergo del Senato which is a very decent hotel in a fantastic location. or... b) the "50th %ile" is probably more like $180-$280, since there are far fewer hotels above $300 than below. In that case, consider Albergo Cesari, which is somewhere around the top of this price range. Otherwise, browse through http://en.venere.com/hotels_rome - - See what you can find (especially promoitions - - when are youi going?) in Trevi, Pantheon or Navona - - these three sectors on the Venere map conform approximately to the Centro Storico. Best wishes, Rex |
I too would concentrate around Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori or the Pantheon. They lack metro stops, although Rome's metro isn't the greatest anyways, but Rome is a terrific walking city and staying in this area is very central to many things.

We stayed at Hotel Teatro di Pompeo,(www.hotelteatrodipompeo.it) which is within a one minute walk of the Campo de Fiori and 5 minutes from Piazza Navona, for a week in August. The location is excellent and we walked to all the sights except the Vatican - we took a bus there. Breakfast is included and is served in the basement of the building which is part of Pompei's theatre. Our room was 150 Euros a night and included private bathroom, AC, fridge and hairdryer. The staff were very pleasant and we thought the hotel excellent value for money.

Why don't you consider renting an apartment. Sometimes they rent for as little as 3 days. Checkout slowtrav.com for rental reviews. We rented in the Spanish Steps area which we loved & paid only 120 EUs a night in the off season. Cheaper than hotels!

Check out this one. Find it's location on a map of Rome and you have to love the location. I stay here every time I go to Rome and love it. It's mid range to me and if it's cheaper than mid range to you use the change for a great lunch.

We stayed at Hotel in Parione. Very small, but nice - after all, you're not in the room very long. We bought b'fast from a little pastry next door. I remember the rate being around $120/night in Sept. http://www.inparione.com/english_site/struttura.htm EXCELLENT location - around the corner from Campo D'Fiori and near Piazza Navona.
