Where to Stay in Rome

We are going to Rome in June and we will have 2 teenagers with us. Where is the best area to stay?

The Italian tourist board suggested somewhere around the Pantheon. How far is this from the the Spanish Steps, or the Vatican?

Santa Chiara is next to the Pantheon. We have stayed in a quad one year and a 2 doubles the next. The location is great and they are very nice and helpful. You can walk to the Spanish Steps (about 15 min) and the Vatican (about 30 min). We took a cab to the Vatican and walked back. It is a fav on this forum.

Do you have a specific budget per night to consider?

Most of the top sites are within walking distance of that area. The Vatican is one of the exceptions. It's walkable, but a few miles way.

WE are figuring about 350.00 usd per nigh but we are having trouble finding a quad room.

Most Rome hotels with quad rooms are by the train station or other less desirable areas.

One exception is the the Smeraldo, right in the historical center - close to Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the Campo dei Fiori. Also an easy(15-20 min) walk to the Vatican. A quad room is well withing your budget. Great reviews on tripadvisor.com

I strongly second the recommendation of Albergo Santa Chiara behind the Pantheon.

Santa Chiara is about a 15 minute walk to the Spanish Steps and about a half-hour to the Vatican, but these are very pleasant walks, with much to see along the way.

Thank you all for your input. I will look at these mentioned hotels.

We took 2 teens last May, rented the St. Peter apartment through www.comfortitalia.com and loved it. We were blocks from the river and the Vatican, a 20-30 min walk to the Spanish Steps or the Pantheon. We walked all over Rome. As a side note, the teens loved using guides each day and seemed to be "lost" on those days we didn't have structured plans for at least some of the day. The guides brought art and history to life for them, so it was more than site-seeing.

Residenza canali also has quad rooms for around 170+ euros including breakfast. Right around the corner from Piazza Navona. We walked everywhere from there, even the Colosseum.

You might want to check ALBERGO DEL SENATO, too, just across the street from the Pantheon. The hotel has a "mini-apartment" which is two levels, with 4 beds, one bath. It runs about $350 USD/night.
