My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy in May. Right now I have reserved the Palm Gallery Hotel for our 3 to 4 night (still deciding) stay in Rome. Although the hotel looks beautiful and is in our price range 120 euro/night I am worried we will be too far removed from the sites. Any advice? Anyone ever stayed at the Palm Gallery hotel that can comment on their experience? Thanks

I've never stayed in that hotel, but I recently spent two months living in that neighborhood more or less. You can take buses to everywhere, but if you're in Rome for only 3 or 4 nights I definitely recommend staying in the heart of things. The best experience in Rome is walking out the front door and having everything right there, strolling around morning, noon and evening, and you won't be able to do that from this hotel.

Agree that the best places to stay for a short trip are the central areas - Piazza Navona, Pantheon, Campo di Fiori areas. We have also stayed in rastevere and really enjoed it as its only a 10 min walk to Campo di Fiori.

The best part of Rome is being able to walk around the beautiful piazzas at night!

We've stayed at the Hotel Arenula, about halfway between Trastevere and Campo di Fiori -- really liked it. Very easy walking to lots of sites.

Just wandering around Rome on foot is a treat. Everything is closer than it appears on the tourist maps. We frequently walked right past a street we were looking for because it came upon us so fast. Or maybe we were just too involved in looking at all the beautiful buildings and piazzas.

I have stayed at the Palm Gallery. While I don't mind not being in the center of town, it is a fair walk to the nearest bus or subway stop. I would look closer to town.

Thanks for the great advice! I think we will look for a hotel in the center of things. Are there any specific (inexpensive!) hotels anyone would recommend that are centrally located, but still in a charming and quieter area? I don't want to be kept up at night, but I'd love to walk our our door to a beautiful street and cafes. Thanks!

Jessy, maybe you need to slightly readjust your expectations of Rome. Charming, quieter, out the door to a beautiful street at an inexpensive hotel is probably not what you'll find in a big, bustling, noisy city like Rome. Cafes, no problem.

We explored the Quartiere Coppede on our last trip to Rome, and we took a tram. I also recall nearby buses. It didn't seem that remote to me.

I looked at the Palm Gallery website and couldn't find prices. I think you can mention a price range here and maybe get some recommendations. "Inexpensive" doesn't mean anything because it so relative.

Someone above mentioned The Arenula which has a reputation as "inexpensive" but I can't call the street beautiful, and I don't at all think of that area as charming or quieter (maybe quieter than... I don't know... a runway?).

There is a certain charm to Rome, and it's not as gritty as the charm of Naples, but neither is it quiet or pretty. The closer you get to the center, the higher the prices will be. Many expensive hotels in the center of Rome are in busy and somewhat noisy locations.

What's your price limit?

I really recommend Trastevere - I found it to be quieter on some streets than the centre area and there are definitely lots of cafes and restaurants and just a lovely atmosphere.

The bedroom is at the back and was very quiet other than a few church bells in the distance. If you click on my name you will find my trip report from NYE week with lots of details of the area and the flat.

But I agree that anywhere that is lively or has cafes around, or even any type of commerce is going to be a bit noisy and inexpensive hotels generally dont have storm windows so you may be woken up by a delivery truck, or bottles being dumped in a garbage truck, or a few revellers late at night.

If you want quiet ensure you find a hotel on a side street with a room facing away from the street, maybe into a courtyard. You wont get a nice street view, but it should be quieter.

This small hotel/inn is near Spanish Steps and Via Condotti, great location. Rates for double 180-230 euros. Stayed there a few years ago. Very helpful and friendly staff at that time.

i really suggest that, if this is your first visit to rome, you stay in the spanish steps area. from there you can walk anywhere-- and a bus termini is nearby as well. i like to walk all hours of day and night in rome-- to the trevi, pantheon, borghese, etc. all are just a very short walk.

we have stayed at the parlamento twice-- but it has gotten a bit more expensive. their website says 90-180E. my friend, who has much higher expectations of luxury than we, absolutely love the HOMS hotel last fall-- it's right by the spanish steps. they are showing about 120E for May. it's rome--- i would spend a little more and stay a little closer in to the top 10 sights.
