Where to stay in Rome?

Hi all,
Just getting into a bit more detail on my plans for the 'big trip' at the end of this year. Hoping you will be able to help with this bit for starters..DH and two DDs aged 9 & 13 will be in Rome for four nights mid-November (that's as close to a specific date I have so far).
The trip starts in Paris (16th October) and hopefully will be a big loop over 9 weeks (finally the airfares are booked!!) and ends in paris 20th December.

I'm looking for some budget accommodation for 4 nights. I realise from lots of reading here, that Rome, & Europe in general, is quite expensive for accommodation but I'm hoping to find something for under the 200 euro per night for the four of us and not too far from the main sights, preferably walking or a simple train or bus ride away. I'm hoping being closer to the end of the year that the rush will be over to some extent...

We will have a car so we will need parking and hopefully no driving in the city!!! .
What would be the best area to look in for hotels or apartments? so far the cheaper hotels or B&Bs are looking the best but I'm open to suggestions...any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks...JT

You aren't allowed to drive in the center of many cities in Italy, including Rome. Here's a map of the ZTL for Rome. Your hotel should inform you of any available parking and they will need to turn your license number in so you don't get a ticket.

Booking.com is a good place to look for quad rooms. Are you going from the U.S.?

Stop the nonsense of looking for Quad hotel rooms in Rome (who does that? :-? ); GET AN APARTMENT. See http://www.vrbo.com/20263#) and this is only one example; hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of great apartments to choose from!

Hi all,
This is driving me crazy, just typed up my replies twice and keep dropping out before I get to submit, arghhhh!
kybourbon, thanks for the tips,I've saved the link to take with me!
Ira, thanks once again for the feedback. I've checked out the link and looks great but I haven't found a direct contact yet to check if I can add a second child to a room meant for 3. children are over 4 years apparently! Would you happen to have a direct email adds for them or a phone number?
Five mins from the railway? and do you remember how long it would take from there to get to any of the main attractions?
Thanks again,
May2011, will definitely check it out, tks for the link and no, I'm travelling from Australia...
Viajero2, appreciate the advice, will check out the link, must be quick here before my connection dies...would love an apartment but I'm still trying to figure out which areas are the best, closest to the main attractions and affordable. Will definitely follow it up though, Thanks again,
JT

When we are in Rome we stay at the Hotel Italia. It is an easy walk from the Roma Termini and most of the major sites. It is a good, clean, basic hotel that has always served us well...and will hopefully do so again as we are staying there in July for 4 nights.

During the time of the year you will be visiting you can get a quad for €150 or doubles for €90 each. Here is their website...

As for the car? I am not sure. I have driven in Rome in the past and will never do so in the future. If you can drop the car in Orvieto and train into Rome you will be better off.

What hotels in Rome have you booked using Priceline, Kimberly?

Or is this just an ad for your blog? Already reported as abuse.

Yes. Really.

There is a metro stop about 1 blk away.

The Rome Metro map is at http://www.rome.info/metro/

You can use www.maps.google.com for walking distances.

Enjoy your visit

I think you will find more affordable options if you look for apartments rather than hotel rooms. We had good luck renting an apartment through realrome.com.
The best locations IMO are near Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori or the Jewish ghetto because these are within walking distance of many major attractions and near lots of good restaurants. Lodging in Trastevere across the Tiber is also a good option; there is a tram line that takes you to the center of the city.

We haven't stayed here yet, but have booked an apartment for my husband and me and 2 teenagers in Rome near the Piazza Navona in July. It's through Sleepinitaly.com I picked it for the location, elevator, A/C, 2 full bathrooms and washer-dryer. There is a loft for one of the kids and a double sleep sofa for the other. It looks very nice, fits your budget, and can be rented by the night. We can't wait to stay there.

Here's the site:

I second the suggestions re. renting an apartment as a 2 BR apartment will be far more comfortable for you with a 9 and 13 yr old - also keeping them happy with food in the fridge is key for that age. The area around Termini is not particularly safe nor close to important sights- walking. A friend of mine rented an apartment through "sleepinginrome.com" (I think that was it) on Via Corso (VERY convenient) that had 2 bedrooms. We rented an apartment for a month in Rome last year through VRBO. Read the quest reviews to see if it's in a convenient location, light (I NEED light)comfortable, etc. Don't trust the descriptions as they often distort the convenience - re. location...READ the reviews!

one more thing - I'm feeling a bit old but....what is "DH" and "DD?" There are enough initials in the Forums to warrant an index for those of us who are clueless.

Try the Domus Julia for a quad room. You will also have access to a private kitchen and dining room.

Driving in Rome is terrifying. We took one cab ride that was like Mr Toad's Wild Ride!! Are you sure you can't do your trip by trains or planes?

From Domus Julia website:
"Those arriving by car may take advantage of a large private parking lot near the Bed and Breakfast. For those traveling by air the Inns Domus Julia provides a shuttle service to and from Fiumicino Airport (Leonardo da Vinci).
Among the services it is possible to book pick-up and from the airport and the port of Civitavecchia and book tours."
