Where to stay in Positano?
Hi, i'm traveling flying into Rome in September and staying for 3 nights, and then taking a train to Positano for 3-4 nights. Any help on where to stay? Also, is it ok to travel from Positano straight back to FCO (Rome airport) the morning of our flight?

There is no train to Positano from Roma. You can use trains to get as far as Sorrento or Salerno, but then you will need a taxi (expensive) or a bus.
Unless you are hiring a private driver, you will need to leave Positano the day before your flight to be at FCO for a morning departure.

You do not want to try and get from Positano to FCO airport the same day as your flight. Strongly suggest you go the day before.
As far as where to stay, we need a bit more to work with. Are you comfortable paying 150 Euros a night, or 1000 Euros?

It would take a minimum of 2 hours to get from Positano to Naples by public transport (bus from Positano to Sorrento - 60 minutes, train from Sorrento to Naples - 70 minutes). Then it would take at least 90 minutes to train to Rome IF you took the fastest train(AV) otherwise travel time is about 2 hours. From Rome to FCO, the train travel time is 30 minutes (they run every 30 minutes). None of this takes into account the transfer times or wait times for next train, etc. If you have a late afternoon flight it might be possible.

Hi L,
You take the train from Rome TE to Salerno and the ferry to Positano - more scenic less schlepping - or you take the train to Naples, the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento and the SITA bus to Positano.

Agree that we need to know the time of your flight and your budget for accommodation. Also, when in September ? The Metro del Mare hydrofoil runs from Positano to Naples until 7 September & it's much the most pleasant and quickest way of travelling between Naples and Positano - http://www.metrodelmare.com/. Otherwise it's a slow journey unless you want to fork out €100-120 (one way) for a car and driver. But if your flight is teatime onwards, it is doable by any route.

Whether this is more scenic to you depends on whether you want to be on the famed Amalfi Drive looking down or at sea level.
Also, there are ferries available from Napoli.

There is also a bus option. The Buono Tourist bus runs from Salerno to FCO. It leaves Salerno (makes 5-6 quick pick-up stops in Salerno)about 5:45 and gets to the airport at 10:00. It also stops in Caserta and a few other towns.

Zeppole - There are no direct ferries between Naples and Positano/Amalfi.
To go by ferry from Naples you would have to change in Sorrento (- or Capri).
The only service from Naples which doesn't require a change is the hydrofoil (- Metro del Mare) via Sorrento.

I suggest you leave yourself plenty of time to fly out of FCO. Two years ago it took us a good two hours to get through all the check points at the airport and then had to take a shuttle to a satellite gate. People were running and I'm sure some of them missed their flights. For a 10 am flight it might be a good idea to get to the airport by 7:30 am.

We suggest Albergo California in Positano--stayed in 2006 and my daughter will be there tomorrow w friends--http://www.hotelcaliforniapositano.it--Maria is very gracious. Better rate if drop by. Amazing views & very convenient to main streets of village. Nothing in the Amalfi Coast is inexpensive, but it's definitely worth it. Also, regarding itinerary, it depends on the type of traveller you are--FLEXIBLE & MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TRIP?? Then, for 1st trip do 2 nights in Firenze (www.bandbsanlorenzo.com), 2 in Roma (try last minute rates w Lorena at www.apartments-rome.com), 2 in Positano, and 1 in Cinque Terre (stay in Vernazza--rent rm by asking along main street or harbor area--no reservations needed--try owner of gelatoria or anyone). These are all places my daughter is staying for thee past week & we've stayed before. You can fill in the gaps on return visits, but those are always musts for us! Of course, it depends on the time of day of your arrival & return flights. LOVE Italia!
