Where to stay in Perth?
Our plans for the September trip are coming together nicely, thanks to great help from this board. One gap, however, is our one-night stay in Perth, en route to Edinburgh.
Since our time there will be limited, we would prefer to be right in Perth(so we can walk to see the sights and eat). Budget will be a factor, because we booked at the Eilean Iarmain in Skye!
Diligent web searching came up with some names. I would love any feedback, on location particularly. (We're only there for a night, so style is not an issue -- but we do want value for our now diminished $$!)
(Some places we looked at were already booked.)
So what's the verdict on these hotels:
Quality Hotel, Leonard St. (Looks like a Railway hotel!)
New County Hotel
Express by Holiday Inn, Dunkeld Rd
Salutation Hotel
Ramada, West Mill St.(being renovated, it says)
Best Western Queens, Leonard St.
Parklands (may be over budget)
..and these B&Bs:
Beechgrove GH, Dundee Rd
Kinnaird GH, Marshall Place (looks like a good location)
St Leonard's Manse, Dundee Rd
Plus 2 that are out of town, but look great:
Over Kinfauns in Kinfauns
Rossie House in Forgandenny
-- worth the drive into town? -- maybe not for just a one-night stay. How is the parking in Perth?
Thanks for any recommendations!

OK -Just which sites do you hope to walk to in Perth? It is a very nice town - but not "site heavy". Scone Palace is on the outskirts.
I can't recommend a place - have been several times but not stayed IN the city itself. Sheila will probably have good info for you -- but I think she is on vacation right now.
I personally would stay in Dunkeld or maybe Crieff.

Thanks Janis -- we're visiting Perth just to take a look around. A long-distant grandfather was an apprentice in Perth, and DH wants to investigate that a bit. Not sure exactly what he has in mind...
Wrong forum for what, richardsonsnm? (she asked, bristling slightly) ;-)

We stayed in May in the Best Western Queens Hotel, right down in the town (close to the train station).. Had a corner room and the hotel was quite nice, and it had parking across the street. The Quality was close by, and closer to the train station and had lots of car parking. It was "open'and sprawling, large (but older) and looked quite nice. Both are pretty good locations., and good for a night.(not much activity at the station, and NOT a "seedy area like some stations)
We changed to the Queens, because we had booked in another Best WEstern out in the suburbs, but that didn't work out...
Yes, Perth is not necessarily a place that is touristy....however if you want to stay there then the Queens would be very nice...(or the Quality, I imagine). We were just 'enroute"after having arrived into Glasgow airport that morning. (I believe the Senior BW rate was not too bad)...and we were comfortable!

Well, thanks all for the interesting sidebar...;-)
Now back to the original Perth question: mari5, thanks for the response. Told me what I needed -- one concern had indeed been that sometimes train stations are in less, um, salubrious parts of town, and good to know that's not the case here. I'll probably just decide on price, since we are trying to keep to some kind of budget for the trip. (Not too successful there, LOL!)

Just wanted to add a note that after I went to Tripadvisor and read very negative reports about some of the places we were considering, we decided to cast the net wider...
We ended up booking with Parklands, which sounds great. I had not put it on the original list because of price, but found a good deal on Smoothhound. Since it was only 10 GBP more than some, um, less desirable options, it was a no-brainer. ;-)
HTH for future Perth visitors.

Yes, upon reading the reviews of the Queens and Quality I understand your concerns. We had never considered either one, but the BW Lovat had good reviews, so we booked with them. There were too many steps for my knee and the ground floor room had a very noisy central air conditioner right outside our window (which we wanted to open for fresh air)
So we were switched to the BW Queens downtown, and as I said we had a lovely corner room, renovated, bright , cheery and clean. Nice staff etc. (I guess we lucked out, given the reviews.
But , if I had read all the reviews on trip advisor (not always real accurate as some people would attest), we would have gone with the Parklands also. It sounds very nice and I hope you have a great visit.
Isnt Scotland WONDERFUL?

mari, thanks for the feedback. I know that sometimes those tripadvisor reports can be weighted or misleading, so I try to keep that in mind when reading!
I fully anticipate that yes, Scotland will be wonderful.
It's funny that in the 25 years I lived in southern England, we never ventured north of the border. When precious vacation time came, we wanted the sun and headed to Italy or Spain. Since we've started planning this trip I have learned how much I missed, and we are really looking forward to our first visit.

Sorry to be too late to help. Just back
For future reference for those who bother with the search function
br />
The Quality was the Station Hotel when I was young and was quite the grandest hotel in town. It's wayyy past its sell by date and very faded. Not a good move.
The New County Hotel, I keep sending people away from becuase it was the pits when I was young (and quite dodgy, too). I can see from the outside that it's been done up, but.......
The Express by Holiday Inn will be perfectly OK, and totally soul-less
The Sally is the bext of these options for location and style. Very old coahing Inn.
The Ramada is what I think of as the City Mills, and is just the same as the Express by Holiday Inn but more upmarket,
The Queens would be a good second to the Sally. In fact it has better facilities.
The Parklands I don't know except for location which is pleasant. It gets a good name, but I think is a sort of done up Guest House.

Hi Sheila, welcome back! Janis mentioned that you were away, so if it was vacation, hope it was great. Missed your input here!
I had looked at the Salutation but it was not available, and the Queens TA reports gave me pause, so when I found the good price for Parklands I went for it. It only has 14 rooms, so you may be right about the "done-up guest house" -- not a problem for us.
I would have gone with the Ramada, but because they are renovating, not possible to book a room -- no matter how I tried!

Sb Travlr,
We just returned from our 18 day trip to Scotland!! We loved it and I will start a trip report today sometime. We stayed at the Parklands Hotel for one night on our way from Edinburgh to the castle country. It was very nice. Our room had a huge king size bed and the room itself was very large and nice. It is an older place that has been probably remodeled a couple of times. Not sure if we booked a little larger than normal room, but it was very large. Bathroom was large also. We ate dinner in the restaurant and it was very good. They seat you in the lounge and you have a drink in there and you place your order from there. It is a small operation so you will see the same people doing several things. I mean the young man that checked us in, also took our drink and dinner order. He also helped out the next morning with the breakfast. Kind of charming. It was fine. It does have a nice view of the park and it is fairly easy to get to using their internet directions.
Oh, if you eat there, get there peach and raspberry malba dessert - it was one of the best I had!
Enjoy your trip!
