Where to stay in Paris
 

My husband, myself and two teens (17 and 14) are going to Paris for 5 days (not counting travel days) in November. What part of Paris should we stay in? Suggestions on hotels? We like people watching, music, we want to go to Jim Morrisons gravesite, my daughter wants to go vintage cloths shopping. We like being close to things. Is it better to get 2 rooms? Should I go with priceline? I don't mind paying extra if the hotel is worth the cost. Thanks

It would help alot to narrow down hotel choices if you give the maximium amount you wish to spend per night for the hotel room.

I'm just marking this post so I can find it again. I took my 14yo daughter to Paris in July and can tell you lots, but I burnt my hand earlier on a hot pan and it can't type with it right now, and having trained as a secretary I cannot manage typing with one hand! But I will get back to you soon....

Does that mean you would be happy at the Ritz in a nice suite for $2500 a night, since most say it is "worth it" for the quality?

I agree with francophile, you haven't given us anything to go on budgetwise.

While normally I would sugget the 5th or 6th, I somehow think for you the 4th (Marais) might be better.

Priceline will not place you in the center of Paris, at least not the moderate hotel range...do a lot of reading before you go that route...

In November of 2003 I stayed at the Hotel Relais du Louvre in the 1st. For about 330e's a night they have a splendid apartment with the advantages of a concierge and maid. I loved the central location to all of Paris (I'm a walker...). I had a single 'coz I was a "single" <GRIN>, but I recommend that hotel... next time I go, I'll stay in an different area.
How's that work?
Otherwise, the Marais might be a good spot for edgy teenagers...

I wish the o.p. would come back and inform us about her budget requirements. She mentions that she won't mind paying extra if the hotel is worth it, but that doesn't give much help. Doesn't Priceline inflate the hotel ratings? For example, if they list a hotel as a 4* it's really a 3*, something like that? So it's misleading.

Our experience with our teenagers in Paris was wonderful. We stayed in the 7th Andr. (I don't dare spell the word but it means neighborhood). Rooms are smallish in Paris, even in better hotels, so you will need to get two rooms. Try a three star hotel like the Hotel De Varenne. You'll experience the real Paris, with little bakeries, delicatessans, florists, and street sounds. Besides, you'll be within walking distance of many of the main sights. I contacted the hotel there by telephone. We are going in a few weeks again, and this time, I went online to make my reservations. It's so easy, but we didn't use Priceline.
Have a WONDERFUL time with your children and remember, teenagers sleep a lot.

Is this the same sandals who just posted to ask about disquising themselves as Canadians to avoid persecution in France? What did you do last time, sandals?

I don't think Priceline automatically inflates 3* hotels to 4* in Paris, I think they are fairly accurate. However, that is easy to check by comparing the hotels usually given and the ratings.

Nobody much recommends Priceline for Paris, though, for someone who cares about location or being close to things, or wanting any kind of charming and/or smaller hotel. But if you are fine with larger modern hotels, you can do okay with it. Since the OP said they like to be central and don't mind paying extra if the hotel is worth it, I don't see why Priceline would be even considered.

Hotel des Grandes Ecoles room for 4 150Euros

Hotel de Notre Dame - 2 rooms @ 125Euros each

Hotel Des Croises (Langlois) 2 double rooms (twins are booked) @ 100Euros each

Has anyone stayed at these.

I'm curious how you were able to get such a low rate at Hotel de Notre Dame. I checked their website and the lowest rate is 155 euro.

I have been going to www.venere.com and you can organize your results by price by clicking on the scroll bars on left blue panel.

I also look at tripadvisor.com and hotels link on this website. Hotel Nesle might be nice for your kids. I am going with a 21 year old and may stay there for this reason.

Also others have been kind enough to tell me where they like staying. Marais and Latin Quarter have been suggested to me.

About airfare I would not do price line for a short time. You have to agree to a stop over. Do you really want that headach for such a short stay and with 3 others. Its up to you. I have been watching fares on www.kayak.com you can manipulate the results view buy scrolling bars on left blue panel. I also like booking directly through airline when on international flights in the event of a problem. Anytime there is a problem the first words out of the ticket agents mouth is who did you book your ticket through.

PS look up Hotel Notre Dame have seen it mentioned may times.

also you can manipulate flight results on kayak.com by price, dep time and arrival time much quicker and easier than other web pages.

My wife and I took our 13 year old granddaughter to Paris last October for a long weekend (left US on Wed evening and returned on Mon AM). We stayed at Hotel Pas des Calais in the 6th. It is near a Metro and right off the blvd St Germaine with many famous restaurants (Deux Magots) and many not-so-famous. Good shopping area- our granddaughter loved that!! We had two rooms since we also had my wife's sister along. I suggest you try the Pas des Calais- have been there twice and have not been disappointed. Very nice rooms, nice people at desk and just a hop,skip, and short jump from The Boulevard!
