Where to stay in Paris?

My wife and I, traveling with our two adult children, are looking for a "really nice" Jr. Suite in Paris for the last 3 nights of our first European vacation. We are comfortable spending around $400.00 per night.

My questions are: a) Which section of Paris will be most convenient for us to stay in, considering we will be doing all of the typical tourest stuff? b)Is there a particular Hotel you might strongly reccomend?

Additonally, any and all other suggestions would be very welcomed; i.e. things not to miss in Paris, great little cafes, churches, etc., etc. Thanks in advance!

We're staying at the Mayfair hotel in the 1st with a suite for 344 Euro per night. I bet you could get a regular room for much less? The hotel is right in the middle of everything in Paris.

I can't help directly, but while you're waiting, do a search here on "hotel recommendation Paris" (w/out the quotes). I found 33 threads in 2007 alone, so that might be a good starting point. Here's one specifically related to your first question:

I would choose a hotel in the 5th or 6th for the central location.

I'd search for a two or three bedroom apartment on VRBO.com.

My undertanding for renting an appartment is that you would need to rent for a minimum of a week, otherwise it is a price concious thing to do.

I don't think that 4 person rooms are all that common. I might consider getting two rooms.

Staying in the 4/5/6th arrondissements is good, but you are never really that far from the sites anywhere in central Paris due to the very good public transportation network.

The 1st is also a possibility, but I think you will find the others a bit more interesting, lots of shops, restaurants, etc. All of these areas would be either a walk or quick metro ride to sites.

Do a search here. Paris hotels is probably a near daily question. There are many recommendations in all price ranges.

Renting an apartment does not necessarily require a week long commitment. Sometimes a shorter time is at a higher rate, but often still cheaper than a comparable hotel offering. Also, VRBO is just a starting place you can search for Paris Holiday or Vacation Apartments and see a number of sites.

I second the recommendation to stay in the 6th. One Hotel in that area is Espirit St. Germaine, but I think you are going to have a difficult, if not impossible time to find a "really Nice" jr. suite for $400. With the Euro so high, I was staying at nice small rooms for that amount.

Four people in a JR suite? makes no sense unless your "very close".

..agree with thought re location. I would avoid an apt for a first European trip esp a 3day stay with adult kids (little ones a differnt story). I would suggest 2 adjoining rooms. Your can go the apt hotel route (citadines ect) but I think apts are just too much to worry about for a first timer with a short stay.

I'd rather have my own room and bathroom for $200 than sleep on a sofabed in my parent's suite for that much.

Thank you all for the opinions. I am about to reserve a Duplex/Loft which will accomodate our party of four, at a place called the Hotel d'Aubusson. The rate will be 420.00 Euro per night. Is that a good value? What do you think?
