where to stay in naples?
 

I'm desperately trying to find a very cheap place to stay while in Naples. Anyone know of any convents or cheap pensiones (that possibly have nice view of bay)?

Would also love to hear of charming pensiones in Rome and/or Florence (with view)and where one can wake up to the church bells ringing.

Patricia: I was in Naples last September and stayed at (pensione) Le Fontane al Mare, located at Via Niccolò Tommaseo, 14 (011-39-081-764-3811). It is right on the bay, across from the beach and Castel dell'Ovo, and next to the Villa Communale (lovely park, Naples Aquarium is there too). The hotel is actually up on the 5th floor of a building and you pay 10c to ride the elevator up (or you can walk and get plenty of daily exercise!). I felt very safe walking around the area at night, to and from restaurants, cafes, etc. Even went to the beach in the evening (across the street!) There is a great pizza restaurant next door with reasonable prices, as well as some terrific seafood places nearby. A single room rate with balcony and a fantastic ocean view cost me 60 euros, a double room costs 100 euros. For the awesome seaviews and location, the hotel can't be beat. Their staff was very friend, esp. Stefano. Continental breakfast is also included in the rate.

The approx cost for a taxi from the Naples airport to the hotel is 20 euros, and about 6 euros from the Naples train station. Alternatively, I took the local busses (#1 bus) which ran effeciently, and only cost 1,25 euro.

From Le Fontane al Mare, you are within walking distance to the Naples port, Molo Beverello, where you can catch the boats to Capri, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, etc. Very convenient......

Hi Patricia: The hotel is a great find, I originally read about it in my "TimeOut" Naples/Sorrento/Amalfi Coast guidebook. I also found this review of the hotel someone posted on 'Trip Advisor' which is extremely accurate and exactly as I found the hotel to be:(http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserR...ia.surink_html). I encouraged my Italian friends to stay there too as they had business in the nearby U.S. Embassy (located across the Villa Communale Park) and they liked it too (all 3 of them were in 1 room, which had more than enough space). The exterior of the building is nothing to write home about, the hotel is on the 5th floor of a commercial/business building. Also, some travelers complain about having to take the elevator up to the hotel. If you have change with you, just remember to keep some 10c coins and you will be fine. Otherwise, we walked up and down the stairs each day (whew) but not unbearable. The lobby area was being refurbished and it was kind of messy, however the rooms more than made up for the drab exterior. Each room has a balcony and I would sit out there every morning and night, watching the sea. The views across the Bay of Naples are just beautiful and totally worth it. If you are staying a few days, you could probably ask them to give you a deal. I did! I was originally in a 50 euro room with bath and when a seaview room across the hall (w/o bath) opened up, I asked if I could switch over to it. They gave it to me for the duration of my stay for only 60 euros. (I was there for 1 week). The staff was all so very friendly and nice to me, I would definitely stay there again!

In Roma, I always stay at the Hotel Campo di Fiori (check out http://www.hotelcampodefiori.com/home.htm) and get a double room for 60 euros. The bath is across the hall (room with bath is slightly more $). Also, get a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor (quieter). The hotel is in the lively Campo di Fiori area that is always bustling from the early morning to mid-afternoon market to the live jazz bands at night and people strolling at night. The Campo district is right off Corso Vittorio Emanuele Blvd (to the left) and within walking distance to the Pantheon, the Colisseum/Forum area, etc. Very central and easily accessible from Roma's Termini train station by taking the #64 bus to the "Corso Vittorio Emanuele" stop (near a McDonald's). I have stayed there 2x and have enjoyed it each time. Buon viaggio!
